Is Hugo a bit tacky now?

Hello all, DP and I have finally found a boy's name we both love (why are boy names so difficult?!) but I'm a little unsure as to whether there are an awful lot of Hugos around now?

Have heard of a few here and there and as much as we love the name I don't really want to choose anything that's really overdone and we're going to hear all the time from other parents. What do you think?

We've also thought of Hugh as a potential alternative but DP isn't as keen - he thinks it's an older man's name rather than something he can imagine calling a little boy. Opinions please, so far it's the only boy's name we've managed to agree on.

It's a lovely name :) does its popularity really matter if it's a name you both love?

It's fine as long as you're frightfully posh.

Hugh is much nicer than Hugo but I wouldn't use either for a baby

I live in a distinctly unposh area and know one. Suits him.

I prefer Hugh to Hugo too. Don't think either are particularly common

I prefer Hugh.

Bit confused about not using it for a baby though. All grown up Hughs started off as babies!

I love Hugo! I'm not likely to ever have a son though, so I named my car Hugo instead (yep, I'm a bit strange and name all sorts of things.)

I know a baby Hugo. His family aren't posh but are fairly wealthy. I think it's a great name

I bloody love the name Hugo!! [Grin] Not tacky and prefer it to Hugh (although love that too!). If you love it, go for it!

I agree with MamaLazarou, it sounds awfully posh.
Friends would be Rupert and Tarquin.
Not my cup of tea at all and I don't like Hugh much either.

I prefer Hugh to Hugo personally.

I know one small Hugo. His family aren't posh although they are reasonably well off.

Hugo is overtly posh. Hugh is more subtle.

How is Hugh any less 'posh' than Hugo?!!

I don't think it's that popular, I've heard of a few and I know one Hugh. I live in a pretty middle class area. I prefer Hugh to Hugo. Hugo sounds Spanish or Italian to me, Hugh sounds like the English version. Both are fairly posh sounding but not overly. If you love it go for it.

It's a bit posh for my taste but it's a perfectly good name and I wouldn't call it "tacky". I really like Huw (i.e. Welsh spelling of Hugh) as an alternative.

It's just the teensiest bit posh but I still think most people could carry it off Grin. I love it and only know one - he's 5 now. It was on my list for DS so I say go for it. It's soooooo much nicer than Hugh IMO.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, I think I may be erring a little more to Hugh now that I've thought about it (and yes scatterthenuns, that was my argument too although DP is apparently having none of it...) but still really like Hugo as well.

We are definitely not posh in the slightest perhaps slightly pretentious? but do live in an area that most would consider slightly middle class so hopefully the 'posh' thing wouldn't be too much of a problem with peers at school etc.

Not really a fan of Huw, but that's just because we have no real link to Wales and so it would feel a little odd to adopt a spelling which differed from the more 'traditional' one.

And not strange at all Fartemisowl, go for it! When DD was born it took three weeks to settle on a name we liked as I'd already given out all of my favourites to my dogs... Grin

I like them both, but prefer Hugh. Hugo's pretty popular around here - one of my DS's has three in his year at school! Don't know any child Hughs, but nearly used it for DS1 - only didn't because it doesn't sound great with our surname, but did use it for his middle name.

I think a baby Hugh would be excellent - nice alternative to all the Alfie/Ollie/Freddies out there!

Getting popular where I am. Not a bad thing, I don't mind popularity, personally.

Mm, maybe 'tacky' wasn't the right word in my title. I think what I meant was I didn't want something that was becoming overused and that he'd be likely to share with others in his class/year at school (although as you said reuset, popularity isn't necessarily a bad thing).

I'm glad the consensus on here has been generally good though and I am really starting to warm more Hugh so perhaps I'll work on convincing DP to go with that.
