Which boy's name?

Here is our shortlist:
Hayden
Rowan
Ewan
Calvin
Devon

We are in Ireland and those names aren't very common here maybe compared to the UK. I've actually never met a Hayden, Rowan or Ewan and the only Calvin and Devon I've met were English so they're quite rare names here. Thanks in advance, our heads are wrecked. Girl's names are so much easier!

Hayden or Rowan. Rowan is my favourite - I like Hayden but would worry about it being lumped with the Jayden/ Kayden type names.

The others are ok, I find Ewan a bit wet. Devon - only if you particularly like Devon!

Thanks mydogeatsnutstoo. Yeah Devon is my husband's favourite, can't say I love it. Hayden I like a lot but like you said, it's kind of shoved in with all the Jayden/Kayden names lately even though it's been around much longer. I love Rowan but there are so many Ronans in Ireland I think the poor kid would be forever correcting people.

I love Rowan.

I knew a Devon. He used to get pissed off when we asked him if he knew how they made it so creamy...

Love Rowan. Ewan okay. Don't like the others.

Lol Daffydil. Yeah I think Devon is a no go, I'm just including it to keep him happy! Wink

I LOVE the shortening Cal so I'd vote Calvin. I don't particularly like Calvin but would use it to get to Cal Grin I know that's not a popular idea in MN though.

For me it's:
Calvin
Ewan
Hayden
Devon

Rowan

I like rowan.
I knew a roan, still said the same, but named after the horse.
Might help with correcting for ronan?
And my autocorrect just threw out roman for ronan.

Oh my goodness. You have a list. A whole list and I can't disapprove of a single one. They're all sensible enough. I know/knew a Rowan (he was my mum's godson) and he's outstandingly successful in his field, so that can be the top of my list. Calvin next, because that excellent Protestant reformer is one of my heroes. Then Devon, because I've known and taught Devons and not one of them was a bad lot. Hayden - I've known Haydens, from ok families, but I knew a Hayden surname and he was an excellent pupil, really nice lad. Ewan - well, there's nothing wrong with it.
You have the MrsTwee seal of approval. Flowers Wine Cake

Rowan
Calvin
Devon
Hayden
Ewan

Rowan is lovely. I'm in Ireland and don't think it'd be confused for Ronan.

FrogSong · 25/08/2015 21:47

Thanks ladies, it looks like Rowan is winning so far.

I'm from Ireland and would not mix up Ronan with Rowan (which would be my choice from your list)

DramaAlpaca · 25/08/2015 22:48

I'm in Ireland and know a couple of Rowans (and lots of Ronans). They are different enough not to get mixed up, I think.

The only Hayden I know is a surname, but it's OK. I also like Ewan, and haven't met any here.

I'm not that keen on Calvin, but I love Cal.

Devon is my least favourite of your list, and I think of it as a girls name.

Ewan or Calvin.

I have met two Devons in Dublin, both quite rough children so it's soured me on the name personally.

I'm alright with Calvin, assuming your surname isn't Kavanagh or something - would be a bit much!

Hayden I'm alright with, I do get the Jayden/Brayden/Kayden association but then I've never met one of those in Dublin.

Rowan is too fem sounding, imo.

I'm in Ireland (Dublin) and I have a Rowan Smile

He's 12 months. Haven't met any others yet but then again we're not doing crèche or playgroups yet.

Friend of a friend had a Rohán which is a nice Irish alternative.

Rowan is my favourite, DH veto'd it though.

Thanks ladies. Glad to see no one is fond of Devon, I'll be showing this to DH!! Grin

Ewan was our number one for a while but now I really think it's come down to Hayden and Rowan. Thanks, this has been a help Smile

Another one for Rowan, lovely name and every guy I know called it are really nice, laidback people. Calvin and Ewan are nice as well, though personally prefer Evan to the latter. Sorry, Devon and Hayden I'm not keen on myself - but as lists go, I don't dislike any! All lovely names, without being either too 'common' or 'different'!

I like them in the order you've listed them!

Hayden is fab (also like Aidan).
Rowan is a close second.

I'm from Ireland and I only know one elderly man called rowan but I also know a girl called rowan in her 30's. Most def a different name to Ronan, doesn't sound the same at all. (At least in a co down accent)

I hate when people do this and I'm just about to do it ... So feel free to shoot me ... Have you considered Calium (kail-um)or even Calum. I think it's similar to Calvin but imo nicer (you might hate it!). I do like Devon tho - quite similar to my maiden surname so that might be why hahaha

birchygoo · 26/08/2015 20:08

Oh but my fav from your list is Ewan - I think it's a fab name!

Report
avocadoadvantage · 26/08/2015 20:15

I like Rowan. What about Evan instead of Ewan? Your Dh might like it too as it sounds like Devon!
