Hi
We really loved Matilda however feel it's gone a bit crazy lately. We would have shortened to Tilly anyway so e are thinking up hyphenated names for tilly.

Does Tilly-jean remind everyone of a Michael Jackson song?

Yes sorry. Matilda Jean, with a nickname of Tilly is fine.

Yes it really does!

Yep, far too close to the MJ song.

Yes, I don't think that's a good idea!
Matilda with Jean as a middle name is lovely. Her nickname could be Tilly Jean.

Matilda Jean is lovely.

Tilly as a nick name is also lovely but not when hyphenated with Jean.

Yes, don't do it as Matilda on it's own is lovely, no hyphenation!

Thank you ladies, it is exactly what we thought.

DH always said, think of what a cruel bully will do with a name.... Wink

I'd go with Matilda Jean.

Or could Tilly be a nickname for Nataile?

Definitely a Michael Jackson song! Not a fan of Tilly as a name on its own anyway, even hypenated. Would you use Tilda like pp suggested? Or christen her something and then just nickname her Tilly anyway...I feel Tilly as a first name is cute on a toddler but tough for a middle aged business woman to pull off.

Jean as a name itself isn't bad either.

If you like Tilly but not fussed about Matilda then what about Ottilie? Gives you the nn Tilly or even Lottie.

Matilda isn't stupidly popular. It's only in the thirties and hasn't risen remarkably in popularity for a few years. It's less popular than Phoebe, Lola, Daisy and Layla for example and I don't think they're seen as horribly popular.

I think a lot of Matildas are Tilly for sort and that's a popular type of name. All the Lily, Milly, Molly type names seem to skew the perception slightly. Lots of Matildas also have other nicknames. Mine is Tilda and so are the 2 others I know. I also know a Matty who is actually a Matilda.

I think it's a lovely, versatile name. If you go with Tilly, you're massively narrowing down her choices. She might prefer a less frilly name. My Matilda hates the nickname Tilly (of her own volition).

...Is it my lover, sorry
I do love Tilly but it's the Jean that throws it off. Matilda Jean avoids that but I think I prefer Tilly

*not

Please don't hyphenate. All it does it either take two nice names and ruin the effect, or stick two ugly names together.
Matilda Jean is lovely, and then you can use whatever nicknames you like but still leave her a proper grown up name of she wants to use it later on.
