I love them! Many of them would fail to pass the MN jury (Vignette? Quinine? Wolfe? Swan?)...

They are real! I just popped a couple into an Ancestry site to see how popular they actually were.

2 Alphord (plus a couple with it as a second name)
Over 1000 Cadwaladr
A good dozen Copernicus (mostly from Derbyshire)
Hamlet (Over 3000)
900 Garibaldi
200 Plato
Just shy of a 100 Pliny (it was big in Halifax)
1 Seabold and 1 Vandloo YAYYYYY UNIQUE!!!
Over 200 Otters (Seems to have made a comeback as many of them have been since 2000)
6 Undecimus (plus several with it as a second name)
About a dozen Onward (mainly from Swansea)

So these are PROPER names. And therefore can be used as they are not made up!!! (Unless you are Seabold or Vandloo).

I LOVE the name Lemon, but for a girl rather than a boy! I actually love a lot of the names on both lists!

Garibaldi is a proper name, not just a biscuit!.

Love Gustavus.

RedToothBrush · 15/08/2015 18:53

Oh my.

There are 5 Capitola. Capitola Bertha had the surname Hole!

1 poor Dogetta. Or Dogetta Zilpah Justice as her full name was.

Over 30 Samuelina.

8 Minnigrey so naming after your fav book or film is nothing new

And poor little Silence.

I quite like Vandloo for a boy.

Enormouse · 15/08/2015 19:12

I quite like Nigel Decimus. It's very average-and-a-bit-dull meets gladiator.

Marcipex · 15/08/2015 19:12

Undecimus?!

Lemon's parents may have been the Gwynnie and Chris of their era! Grin

Augustus Debonnaire . Best name ever.

SmugairleRoin · 15/08/2015 22:54

Hamlet...not exactly wishing a happy life on the child, is it?

Report
Vatersay · 15/08/2015 22:57

One hopes Dogetta was known as 'Etta'.

Largely these names are nicer than some of the corkers on the baby names threads though.

My great great great great Grandmother's names were Mehitabel and Patience. I love old fashioned names...I bet Otter would be looked at as v.chic these days!

I'm very taken with Buenaventura if DC2 is a boy.

Brilliant!

Lemon William Smile.

I do wonder if some of them have a story to tell though.

E.g. Younger Harry. What happened to the first Harry? And Silence - stillborn perhaps?

Imagine having triplets in 1868. I wonder if they all survived.

Topsy Violetta is my favourite. Baby Topsy :)
