meglet Sat 15-Aug-15 18:16:52

they are proper, robust names aren't they smile .

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty Sat 15-Aug-15 18:27:59

I love them! Many of them would fail to pass the MN jury (Vignette? Quinine? Wolfe? Swan?)...

toofarfromcivilisation Sat 15-Aug-15 18:30:04

Bet Major Job hated his parents!

BrittaTheNeedlesslyDefiant Sat 15-Aug-15 18:40:34

Quite taken with Florence Gooseberry grin aww

And the triplets Faith, Hope and Charity

And poor Mooretta Flora, named after her father Moore grin

RedToothBrush Sat 15-Aug-15 18:45:38

They are real! I just popped a couple into an Ancestry site to see how popular they actually were.

2 Alphord (plus a couple with it as a second name)
Over 1000 Cadwaladr
A good dozen Copernicus (mostly from Derbyshire)
Hamlet (Over 3000)
900 Garibaldi
200 Plato
Just shy of a 100 Pliny (it was big in Halifax)
1 Seabold and 1 Vandloo YAYYYYY UNIQUE!!!
Over 200 Otters (Seems to have made a comeback as many of them have been since 2000)
6 Undecimus (plus several with it as a second name)
About a dozen Onward (mainly from Swansea)

So these are PROPER names. And therefore can be used as they are not made up!!! (Unless you are Seabold or Vandloo).

nannyplumislostinspace Sat 15-Aug-15 18:47:34

I LOVE the name Lemon, but for a girl rather than a boy! I actually love a lot of the names on both lists!

Rivercam Sat 15-Aug-15 18:51:03

Garibaldi is a proper name, not just a biscuit!.

Love Gustavus.

RedToothBrush Sat 15-Aug-15 18:53:48

Oh my.

There are 5 Capitola. Capitola Bertha had the surname Hole!

1 poor Dogetta. Or Dogetta Zilpah Justice as her full name was.

Over 30 Samuelina.

8 Minnigrey so naming after your fav book or film is nothing new

Ladypug Sat 15-Aug-15 18:57:53

I like Arden but thought it was a girls name

Marcipex Sat 15-Aug-15 19:05:12

And poor little Silence.

verystressedmum Sat 15-Aug-15 19:08:40

I quite like Vandloo for a boy.

Enormouse Sat 15-Aug-15 19:12:25

I quite like Nigel Decimus. It's very average-and-a-bit-dull meets gladiator.

Marcipex Sat 15-Aug-15 19:12:42

Writtenbyme Sat 15-Aug-15 19:14:46

Dogetta! Brilliant!

VerityWaves Sat 15-Aug-15 20:45:41

Lemon's parents may have been the Gwynnie and Chris of their era! grin

KenDoddsDadsDog Sat 15-Aug-15 22:48:46

Augustus Debonnaire . Best name ever.

SmugairleRoin Sat 15-Aug-15 22:54:35

Hamlet...not exactly wishing a happy life on the child, is it?

Vatersay Sat 15-Aug-15 22:57:50

One hopes Dogetta was known as 'Etta'.

Largely these names are nicer than some of the corkers on the baby names threads though.

SilverNightFairy Sat 15-Aug-15 23:03:37

My great great great great Grandmother's names were Mehitabel and Patience. I love old fashioned names...I bet Otter would be looked at as v.chic these days!

jorahmormont Sat 15-Aug-15 23:08:55

Iorwerth is my OH's middle name grin

I'm very taken with Buenaventura if DC2 is a boy.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler Sat 15-Aug-15 23:13:14

Lemon William smile.

I do wonder if some of them have a story to tell though.

E.g. Younger Harry. What happened to the first Harry? And Silence - stillborn perhaps?
