But what do people think of the name Hartley? For a boy.

It's not completely random, it has a meaning which relates to a family member but I'd rather not say incase we do go for it and then it outs me. Brother name is Henry.

I think it would be ok as a mn if you wanted it for sentimental reasons but as a first name I'm not keen and don't think it goes with Henry it clashes and is a completely different style.

Shadow1986 Wed 05-Aug-15 20:32:26

Thanks littlegreyhat - regarding the style I see both as old English names, although hartley is more a surname I know. Thanks for your opinion :-)

'Bit Random' is a terrible name
but I quite like Hartley

Shadow1986 Wed 05-Aug-15 20:35:40

Haha thanks Didactylos, I didn't realise until after I posted that I should have put the name in the title...doh

Didactylos Wed 05-Aug-15 20:37:34

Im really sorry but I couldn't resist blush
mostly because my first response was 'oh well, I suppose it might sound ok with the right surname...'

JR Hartley?

SunnyL Wed 05-Aug-15 20:38:25

maximama Wed 05-Aug-15 21:00:19

I like it. Not sure it goes with Henry tho, bit too similar for me - both H...y. But I do like it on and of itself smile congrats

L.P Hartley and J.R Hartley.

Shadow1986 Wed 05-Aug-15 21:47:58

I've never heard of JR hartley or LP hartley, sorry! But after googling I don't think they are anyone I need to worry about.

Thanks maximama I agree they are similar...I wasn't sure if this was a nice thing in that they sound nice together or a bad thing! Thanks for your opinion! :-)

squoosh Wed 05-Aug-15 21:49:35

Don't know why that posted three times. Sorry!

NewOrleansGirl Wed 05-Aug-15 21:52:02

Immediately made me think of Hartley's jam, marmalades and jellies.

BYOSnowman Wed 05-Aug-15 21:54:37

makes me think of jam too!

Only1scoop Wed 05-Aug-15 21:56:49

Hartley Hare

Scarydinosaurs Wed 05-Aug-15 22:01:33

I like it but think it's too similar to Henry.

Whenwillwe3meetagain Wed 05-Aug-15 22:02:14

I'm related to Wallace Hartley who was the leader of the orchestra on the Titanic-so I think it's a fab name

Sparklingbrook Wed 05-Aug-15 22:03:02

I think of

a) Jam
b) Hartley Hare in Pipkins

I don't like it or think it;s a great name. it's more a surname.

DunderMiffed Wed 05-Aug-15 22:05:16

I think they would get called Harley their whole life. Great middle name though!

Shadow1986 Wed 05-Aug-15 22:09:44

I knew about the jam brand but wasn't sure how big a deal.

Keep comments coming giving me lots to think about! Thanks for the comments so far.

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest Wed 05-Aug-15 22:13:29

I really like Hartley but think that it's quite similar to Henry so might be a bit matchy

Sparklingbrook Wed 05-Aug-15 22:15:26

Anyone who watched childrens' TV in the 70s would make the Hartley Hare association. It was a popular show and he wasn't a very nice charavter IIRC. Not sure how much that matters in 2015 though.

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs Wed 05-Aug-15 22:22:12

I used to love Pipkins grin.

Hartley makes me think of the hare too, but I don't think anyone under late thirties would think of that.
