Baby names

Margot, Nancy or Jemima?

Mclaren37 · 02/08/2015 06:08

Please help us decide between these three girls names; Margot, Jemima or Nancy? We love them all for different reasons.
(Nancy is probably a different style from the other two, but is my grandmother's name and our last name begins with an N as well, some friends think the double initial thing is cute, I'm not so sure..)
Opinions please!

Love Margot and Nancy - both in our top 5 for a girl. Not sure about Jemima - she sounds like a nice girl who knows her times tables (wouldn't fit in very well round here!)

Nancy Smile such a lovely name for a child or an adult. So easy to say and soft pronunciation, just beautiful

I prefer Jemima but if you ever live or work in the US there are massively negative connotations surrounding it.

If not, go for it

From personal experience, there are no problems using the name Jemima anywhere else in the world beyond people not knowing how to pronounce it. The issue is a Mumsnet one, not a real world one it seems.

Jemima is my favourite

I don't like Nancy at all (so unsexy). Margot and Jemima are very pretty: of the two, Margot is the more internationally versatile and Jemima the prettier.

Unsexy Bonsoir? Strange comment.

Enchufla · 02/08/2015 08:09

Theyre all awful. Jemima is the least awful

Report
Bonsoir · 02/08/2015 08:17

Why strange? Why lumber a DD with a first name that is a complete turnoff?

When I named my daughter Nancy, I was definitely worrying about whether it would be considered sexy or not. I love objectifying a woman from birth. Also, I have often found men turn the other way when they hear a name they deem unsexy. They definitely do that.

OP, our Nancy has always received nothing but positive comments (though I suppose no-one would tell me the negative ones to my face!). I still love the name as much as I did 5 years ago and she is such a little Nancy.

You do have to consider how attractive she will be to men in future. After all thats her only worth and bagging a man should be her main goal in life

I like Margot and Nancy. Both would have been on my list (not so sure about husband) if we were having a girl. Not keen on Jemima. I think Margot edges it.

I love margot! It works on all ages i think, and sounds strong yet feminine.

Nancy just makes me think of oliver twist tbh. I dont hate it but it doesnt do anything for me. Jemima = puddleduck....

Love Nancy. (Definitely sexy if that's your criteria, like Bonsoir Confused)

Jemima is fine.

Not keen on Margot.

Not too keen on any of them but Margot is the best by far. Makes me think of Margot Fonteyn Smile. Nancy is awful, dowdy and dated. Jemima sounds a little like a comedy name to me.

I like Margot best.

Oh Margot is definitely the best - effortlessly chic (if you discount The Good Life)

I have a Nancy. I love, love, love the name and it gets so many positive comments. It's unusual without being unheard of, it's feminine yet sparky.

Margot - The Good Life
Jemima - Puddle Duck.

I do know a little Jemima though and it really suits her.

Love margot, don't like the others at all.

thunderbird69 · 02/08/2015 09:02

Maybe because of my age, they conjure up these images -

Jemima - duck or odd-looking ragdoll from Playschool
Margot - Leadbetter from The Good Life
Nancy - unpleasant name for a gay man

so, sorry I don't like any of them

Report
RiverTam · 02/08/2015 09:11

The Good Life one was Margo, not Margot, which in my head is a big difference! Margot is the best but I don't really like any of them.

I like Margot best, it's on our shortlist for DC 4 but our third child is Cecily Margot so not sure if we can really use her middle name for new baby or not! I quite like Nancy, less keen on Jemima for a first name...

I think they are all lovely. If I had to pick i'd probably choose Nancy and team it with a really classic middle name like Ann or Elizabeth.

Really really don't like Nancy - never understood MN love for it but Shock at Bonsoir's comment!
