Opinions on the name Dorothy nn Dottie

To go with siblings Charlie and Tilly.

Love the meaning of Dorothy, 'gift of god' and she would be a gift as we have lost two babies.

YOu can and you should. very nice name. Though I like Dorothea very much in preference

I really like Dorothea but charlie has another brother called Theo, I didn't want it to be too similar in sound, as she would probably be nicknamed Thea...too similar?

And I don't want to be accused of copying ;) Not that I ever see him

Of course you can call her that, nothing to stop you! It's sensible, if plain.

Lovely name, and Dottie is a cute nickname, that sounds good with the other names.

There's nothing to stop you calling your child Dorothy, but you will have to accept that many people won't like it. There are some old names that people are trying to bring back and I wonder whether part of the reason is that nobody else is called that. There's usually a reason!

Simply love it!

If DS had been a girl, she would have been Dorothy. It's a fab name, on both sides of our family as well.

Sophronia Thu 23-Jul-15 12:12:45

Dorothy is great.

RoosterCogburn Thu 23-Jul-15 12:13:54

It's a lovely name, I also love Dorothea.

Congratulations!

Dotty is a sweet name

I know a 4yo Dorothy, nn Dotty. I love The nn and it really suits her. Dottie goes well with Charlie and Tilly and if you love the name definitely go for it.

Thank you, quite surprised at the love for Dorothy smile to be fair not everyone will love the name, a lot of people didn't like Tilly's name but it had a special meaning for OH.
I really want a special meaning and so far this name feels right - Suppose the only association with the name I have is Wizard of Oz, but I like the film smile

Spydra Thu 23-Jul-15 13:24:13

I love it - please do go ahead.

SaulGood Thu 23-Jul-15 13:25:47

Oh it's lovely. I like Dorothea even more.

Congratulations.

I think it's nice, why not? OK some people may not like it, but there are so many 'old people' names around now, and actually I much prefer it to say, Elsie, or the very popular Florence. The wizard of Oz association is fun, too!

I love Dorothy! I know someone who's just had a Dorothy May.

KleineDracheKokosnuss Thu 23-Jul-15 20:56:15

I like it. But I'm biased as dd has a variant for her name.

MargoReadbetter Thu 23-Jul-15 20:58:13

I like it. I had a friend Dorthe in childhood. In fact, not sure about the spelling in Danish.

Zzzsnatcher Thu 23-Jul-15 21:55:49

Go for it, great name!

HarrietSchulenberg Thu 23-Jul-15 22:03:21

Lurky my mum is a Dorothy May smile. Born in 1939 just after my grandma had been watching a certain popular new film.

AndNowItsSeven Thu 23-Jul-15 22:04:27

Yes it's really cute, love the meaning too.

Diggum Thu 23-Jul-15 22:08:08

I never knew that's what it meant. I don't think I've ever met a Dorothy in real life but it is just lovely! Dottie so so cute too. Definitely do it!

DoloresLandingham Thu 23-Jul-15 22:12:22

Love it. I know a three-year-old Dorothy who is universally known as Dodo - she's adorable.

MehsMum Thu 23-Jul-15 22:16:17

I campaigned hard for Dorothy when we were having DC. DH didn't like it, even as a middle name and I am still a bit sad.
