I'm running out of time and really need a pretty girls name. My short list has all been unusual so far but suddenly decided I like the name Emily. Is Emily Brown pretty or boring?

Wafflenose Mon 20-Jul-15 13:48:08

I know one, and there's a really fab children's book about one. Like it.

PennilynLott Mon 20-Jul-15 13:49:56

You'd have to get her a rabbit

Lovely name. I have always loved the named Emily.

there's a book. David Tennant read it on cbeebies.

it's a lovely name. and it's not like you'd be using a famous character name like Harry potter.

Emily Brown! Emily Brown! Sorry. DS2 is obsessed with the books (they're by Cressida Cowell). They are good though, and she's a great character. It's a nice name (and the books aren't so mainstream that it would be an issue, I just have to read them a lot so I immediately make the association).

Is there a rabbit to go with her?

Minniebrown Mon 20-Jul-15 22:51:14

Haha I had no idea she was part of a book series! Having googled it I think I'm now even more keen to call her Emily smile

I love it...go on youtube and search for 'Miss Brown, to you" by Billie's all about a lovely girl called Emily Brown...I can imagine singing it to my child if I had a child called Emily Brown!

"Who do you think is comin' to town
You'll never guess who
Lovable, hugable Emily Brown
Miss Brown to you
What if the rain comes pattering down
My heaven is blue
Can it be sending me Emily Brown
Miss Brown to you
I know her eyes will thrill ya
But go slow, oh, oh
Don't you all get too familiar
Why do you think she's comin' to town
Just wait and you'll see
The lovable little Miss Brown to you
Is baby to me, yes, yes
Mark it down"

So boring! With a plain surname something less Meh. Eliza, Esme, Iris... Anything but not Charlotte also dulksville

Pomegranatemolasses Wed 22-Jul-15 23:12:49

This being Mumsnet, you knew there couldn't possibly be a thread with unanimous lovely comments! Cute name, btw.

morethanpotatoprints Wed 22-Jul-15 23:14:12

I have an Emily and Emily Brown is lovely grin
We chose it as we like classic names, have 2 ds with traditional names.
Turned out that loads of others had decided to as well. sad
I wanted less popular tbh, but she is 11 now so maybe not so popular.
Still, a beautiful name grin

LondonRocks Wed 22-Jul-15 23:16:01

Sweet name - but give her a magnificent middle name.

Emily Genevieve Brown
Emily Evangeline Brown
Emily Xanthe Brown

i thought you were asking if you could call her Emily Brown because of the books smile

They are fabulous and Emily Brown is a great role model. Go and buy one and then, definitely, call her Emily!

It's very, very ordinary.

andadietcoke Thu 23-Jul-15 10:31:05

Surname also Brown, and I feel like I've missed out now!

sweetpeame Thu 23-Jul-15 11:24:38

I don't know the books but it's absolutely fine as a name. You will get lots of people on here who will berate you for picking something remotely popular but personally I would go with something popular over something obscure/"youneeq"/tacky even if (shock horror) there are 2 other girls in her year at school later with the same name. Emily Brown is nice, not wildly exciting but as I said that may not be a bad thing...

MitzyLeFrouf Thu 23-Jul-15 11:55:36

To quote Marilla Cuthbert it's 'a real good plain sensible name. You've no need to be ashamed of it.'

But personally I do think a plain surname like Brown needs something a bit more fabulous than Emily.

ButterDish Thu 23-Jul-15 12:19:33

I thought of Marilla Cuthbert, too, Mitzy (though, alarmingly, my autocorrect wants to make Marilla 'Amarillo'...)

It's a perfectly good name, but I agree with those urging somewhat more originality. I say that as someone who had very much an Emily Brown type of name (in the context of my home country), and it always felt a bit beige, as if my parents had chosen it primarily to be inoffensive, like magnolia paint. Also, on any big list (dentist, GP surgery, school roll) there were always several of us with the same first and surname.
