Currently 28 weeks pregnant with a boy. Me and dh have decided his name is going to be Cooper -which I love love love ? I like kindof out there/americana names- names that aren't to crazy I guess (cooper us really moving up the popularity charts) what do you think??? I just want to know what kind of reaction it'll get lol x

If you have definitely decided, I wouldn't tell a soul until he's born. If he's presented along with his name people are far less likely to comment negatively.

It's great, love it. I have two boys with surnames for first names - also know a Fletcher, Hudson, Huxley.
It is racing up the popularity charts though, do you want popular or lesser known?

Really not keen - sorry. I do like a few American/surname names, but this isn't one of them. Just feels a bit overly trendy.

And agree about the not telling people thing - much less likely to get unwelcome comments that way.

I don't like it but my kids are called George and Henry so clearly it's not my taste. Presumably you wouldn't like those two names so we are even! Cooper is an inoffensive name, you should use it. Just don't tell anyone the name till he is born. Congrats!

Don't like the fad for surnames as first names. But if I did cooper wouldn't be my choice sorry. I thought cooper was originally derived from the name of someone who made barrels? I just googled it and it came up as a girls name? Don't see how though I would assume boy, but I guess a surname could be either.

Regan is one of King Lear's daughters, so isn't a recent invention as a first name. Ditto Asher-that's in the Bible.

I'm fairly neutral on Cooper. I think it really depends on what your surname is.

I don't like surnames as first names so I don't like it at all. You may find that it's quite a marmite name tbh. It absolutely doesn't matter if you love it. The names I like, you'd probably abhor.

I think what heels means by 'indicative' is that surname type names and creative spellings have become associated with a certain socioeconomic status. I don't think this is necessarily a criticism though. Just as if you were told siblings were named Cressida, Ludmilla and Ptolemy, you'd make a couple of assumptions, you can probably do the same with Raegan and Cooper. You may not be right but they do conjure up an image. I think Heels was saying that Arthur and George and Henry type names span all sorts of generations, classes and cultures.

The only Cooper I know comes from quite a well-to-do family. They're an outdoorsy sort so I think they went with an outdoorsy-sporty sounding name.

I like it - my MIL's maiden name is Cooper. It's a strong name.

Nobody loves every name - there will always be people who don't like it no matter what you choose.

Pfft don't worry about the reaction, Im sure we got a few faces about DS2s name (Sullivan) but i bloody love it and really don't care if others don't.
Have courage of your convictions OP, Cooper is a fine name!
