I've already had a thread about a different first name with Ethel, so I've heard all the stuff people think about Ethel as a name in general. But what do you think about this as a combination? Classic English surname beginning with B, two syllables.

I actually prefer Ethel Rose.
I haven't seen your other threads smile

swancourt Thu 09-Jul-15 13:25:38

The gist of the other thread is that everybody hates Ethel, ha ha.

Northumberlandlass Thu 09-Jul-15 13:36:12

Really? There is no accounting for taste wink

Allthatnonsense Thu 09-Jul-15 13:46:26

I like it. Rose is so pretty and quite rare as a first name.

BBQsAreSooooOverrated Thu 09-Jul-15 13:47:18

I prefer Ethel Rose actually Too.
I quite like Ethel. Definitely a grower.

iamnotaponceyloudperson Thu 09-Jul-15 13:49:53

Rose is very pretty and although its quite cutesy works as an adult too. Wouldn't worry too much about what anyone thinks of middle names. I couldn't tell you what any of my DCs' friends' middle names are and can only remember the mid names of two of my friends' kids and one of my 3 nieces!!

swancourt Thu 09-Jul-15 13:55:12

I know, but I have to like the middle name :D And you never know if they'll end up needing or using it. I am loving this name right now.

Not even pregnant - ttc DC3 though smile

iamnotaponceyloudperson Thu 09-Jul-15 13:59:44

Not even pregnant!!! I was the same trying out endless names for about 2 years, still DC3 had no name til he was 2 weeks old and I'm not sure I like it now. Good luck.

I don't mind Ethel but I also prefer Ethel Rose to Rose Ethel. I don't think Rose Ethel flows very well.

brusselsproutwarning Thu 09-Jul-15 14:03:55

Love name Rose. But Ethel is too much like nettle . I'd only use Ethel if it was a family name as in some sort of tradition.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost Thu 09-Jul-15 14:26:51

Love Rose but can't stand Ethel.
But Ethel Rose flows. Where as Rose Ethel doesn't.

SunnyBaudelaire Thu 09-Jul-15 14:28:42

Ethel is awful and Rose added to it makes it even worse.

GinUpGirl Thu 09-Jul-15 14:47:49

I love Ethel. Rose is boring.

Something Rose has a better rhythm than Rose Something. Ethel is a bit 'dusty' as a name.

Sophronia Thu 09-Jul-15 15:00:10

I like it, Rose as a first name is lovely but boring and generic as a middle name.

MamaLazarou Thu 09-Jul-15 15:35:52

Sorry, there's nothing you can do to Ethel to make it pretty: not even adding Rose to it.

IsadoraQuagmire Thu 09-Jul-15 15:55:43

I think Ethel is a lovely name, and Rose is beautiful.

TempsPerdu Thu 09-Jul-15 17:05:51

Ethel Rose does flow better, but (aside from the fact I don't like Ethel) it makes me think of one of those Anglo-Saxon kings - Ethelbert or Ethelred the Unready!

I do like Rose as a first name though.

Indantherene Thu 09-Jul-15 18:53:07

Those who think Ethel is a "lovely name" have you got particularly strong accents that change the sound? It has an ugly sound to it, and is usually said "Effl".

mathanxiety Fri 10-Jul-15 02:15:50

Sounds like Rose Pethal is missing a P.

Please do not use Ethel for any future baby. It is truly dreadful.

Unless the people you know are remarkably well spoken the th turns into a f

Ethel wouldn't become Effl in the North but I still dislike it-its a granny name too far for me.
