BIL just used our ds's name on his new puppy...

Grr.. That really.
Ds1 is due today and after 9 months of stewing over a name for him ( feel like all the ones I love are spoken for by friends and family's kids) my brother in law has just named his puppy Ted. I could cry. Especially as he named his son Rex which to me is a better dog name..
We had decided a few days ago on Ted Sidney E... But feel that we can't use it now.
Any other Ted-like names we might like? Middle name is Sidney and surname begins with an E.

Eddie?

Can't you have a word with him and ask him to choose something else?

Alternatively, Theo.

Or still go for Ted?? It's only a dog, it can't cause too much confusion.

ApocalypseNowt Mon 06-Jul-15 14:06:25

What about Theodore? You can nickname that Theo or Ted?

Are you looking for a short name in particular? Ben? Sam? Todd? Dom?

Think Dominic Sidney sounds quite nice actually. Hope you find something you like smile

It doesn't matter if you go for Ted. Just do it.

Zakken Mon 06-Jul-15 14:20:31

Make it Edmund, Edwin or Edgar (further options are available). You can still call him Ted, but there will be more choice.

Stoppissingonthefloor Mon 06-Jul-15 14:24:40

Really don't like the long versions of Ted, plus our surname begins with an e so would sound silly. I really don't get having a long by name if it'll never be used? Plus if he does like Ted he could drop the t and be Ed.
God It's not even a nice dog, wee nippy jack Russell..

TinyManticore Mon 06-Jul-15 14:27:28

Did he know you were about to name your child Ted and he used it first, or is it an unfortunate coincidence?

Ty, Sed (sedrick) Jed, Seb,

I would go ahead with your plans. It's not like he is going to get offended! Just make a joke out if it.

OttiliaVonBCup Mon 06-Jul-15 14:32:46

One of my cousins and a friend used DDog's name for their children.

DDog was there first.

I don't mind.

Stoppissingonthefloor Mon 06-Jul-15 14:33:37

Dh mentioned it last week and bil actually said he really liked it. Clearly. Pure knob. I'm hormonal and sure it's not a big a deal as it is in my head.. But he's still a knob

Toooldtobearsed Mon 06-Jul-15 14:33:38

Just use the name!

When I met my DiL to be, I had 2 dogs and a cat.

One dog had her name and the other cat and dog had the same name as both of her brothers!

Confused the hell out of me when she kept talking about what she was buying for 'D's' birthday. Totally inappropriate for a young dog!

Just go for it. To be bunt, by the time your Ted has grown up, t'other Ted will be gone.

Stoppissingonthefloor Mon 06-Jul-15 14:37:01

Haha I keep thinking that.. How long do jack Russell's live anyway?!

tabulahrasa Mon 06-Jul-15 14:39:31

About 14 years or more...

Do you think they'll spend much time together? If so it will be confusing for a small child and any age dog (as they don't really get cleverer with age, lol).

If not, just do it.

Just call your son TED!!!!

I accidentally did this! Got a new puppy and named him and then when SIL was pregnant she told me it was very very close to her favourite boys name and she couldn't believe it when I had called the dog what I called him.
I told her she should still use the name as it's not exactly the same and her son will be around long after the dog will.
I do sometimes call them by the others name by mistake and if she is here with my nephew and I call his name, my dog comes over!
But we laugh about it and hopefully she doesn't mind too much that I sort of stole her baby's name for my dog!

Zakken Mon 06-Jul-15 14:42:47

Clearly our tastes are diametrically opposite, as I have a much-loved Jack Russell.

They can be very long-lived smile My neighbour has a 17 year old JR who is very fit for her age.

Stoppissingonthefloor Mon 06-Jul-15 14:43:12

not really, he lives an hour or so away. Just annoying he named the dog so close to our due date. I'm so getting a dog and naming it Steven (his name)

Stoppissingonthefloor Mon 06-Jul-15 14:45:25

We had. A horrible jack Russell who lived next door and barked all day and night. Such an unlikeable wee thing. Poor thing was prob attention starved looking back

Cuppaand2biscuits Mon 06-Jul-15 14:48:40

Fred?

Stoppissingonthefloor Mon 06-Jul-15 14:55:05

Dh likes Fred but I just don't love it like Ted. Hoping now the baby will come out and actually be a girl and solve all the Ted drama.
