Iris- has it peaked?

Quite like Iris but don't want a mega popular name. It was ranked 106 in 2013 (which was only 505 girls!), I know it's trendy but will it go higher?

I have never met, or even heard of, a real live Iris anywhere near me. So I think it's stretching things a bit to call it trendy.

As for will it go higher - I don't know if it's possible to predict in advance which names will catch on and become mega-popular, and which won't.

I don't think Iris will ever become mega popular, because for every person who thinks of goddess or flower, there iwill be another who thinks eyeballs.

No. Never met one, none at school or nursery. Not peaked unless this is its maximum popularity.

Yes it's the eyeballs issue!

Also similarity to Isis

I can think of three but the youngest is about 4 I think so maybe not so popular in the last couple of years in my area (SE).

I think Isis has killed any potential popularity for Iris.

I really liked the girls' name Isis too. It's a shame.

No it hasn't peaked. Still on the climb in the 2013 stats

I've met two under 12 months as it goes. So I don't think Isis is doing too much damage to it as a name

Yes, still climbing, and further to go. Very popular where I am.

I know a couple one about 10, a toddler and my best friends if her ds would have been a dd. i don't think it's overly popular

Only know one, a French girl in DD's class so it is not pronounced like ISIS. I think it is lovely.

I know a little Isis. Feel bad for her having that conversation starter of a name.

ShadowFire · 30/06/2015 12:58

There used to be a little Isis at my DC's nursery too. It's an unfortunate name to have now. But she was born before ISIS appeared and her parents couldn't have known that would happen.

Oh yes, totally unforeseeable.

I'd be surprised if Iris wasn't in the top 100 for 2014 and 2015.

manicinsomniac · 30/06/2015 13:07

I've never met one so wouldn't call it a mega popular name.

I really like both Iris and Isis. I'd still use Isis if I wanted to - ISIS is usually known as IS now anyway and, as there are already loads of kids called Isis, it wouldn't matter

There are around 700,000 babies born most years. If 505 of them are called Iris, you really don't have much to worry about. Even if 700 of them were called Iris, that would be one in a thousand :)

Never met one and there are none in the large primary school I work in.

I think its beautiful and haven't met any girls called Iris myself. Have you considered Ivy? That's my dd's name and we've never met another. Not sure how popular it is on the lists though.

Report
Sophronia · 01/07/2015 09:09

Ivy was #66 in 2013.

Report
reuset · 01/07/2015 10:08

I remember Ivy jumped a massive 80 places when it first entered the top 100 a couple of years ago. Though I've never met a baby Ivy I don't think

Iris was top 30 a few decades ago, and after a period of decline has been coming back into fashion rising steadily for years.
