Baby names

What do you think of this?

Our baby will be mixed Indian and British, and will have my husband's Indian surname. He is keen that the baby doesn't have a typically Indian first name, since the surname is already. The thing is that I really love Indian names, so I'm trying to come up with ideas that will keep us both happy.

What do you think of the name Maya? My main reservation is that it might lead to confusion about pronounciation. I think it is meant to be pronounced MY-a, but wonder if people might say MAY-a. I guess we could spell it Mya, but that's not the Indian/Sanskrit spelling.

Maybe I'm over-thinking!!! Any other nice name ideas?

Thanks!

I like the name and would pronounce Maya as MY-a too.

I read that as May-a, which I think is pretty but think if you feel strongly about pronunciation you may have to spell differently

Just a warning: Maya is very, very popular at the moment. I know of four born in the last year.

I don't think anyone will struggle to pronounce it.

How about Mahiya?

It is supposed to be pronounced My-a, like you said. Lovely name.

Is Maya popular now? I thought it was Mia that was everywhere.

Op I think it's a lovely name and good idea. I think I've only ever heard it pronounced MY-a.

Very pretty name but., one rule with names is spell it how you want it pronounced or you/she will be forever correcting people, so. If you want it pronounced Mya, spell it that way.

Maya is Mya, Mia is mee-ah.

I think it is gorgeous. The only Anya I know is Russian, and uses it as a less formal version of Anna.

Both gorgeous names, I prefer Maya out of the two though.

How about Amna? I know a lovely Indian lady named Amna and I've always loved it

Both Maya and Anya are beautiful ancient goddess type names. Mya would remind me of the cosmetic surgery brand, sorry.

Have you thought about Martha or Zara?

Maya is nice, but it is getting quite popular I think, it was #51 in 2013 and I wouldn't be surprised if it ranked higher now.

Other suggestions...

Asha
Arya
Jaya
Lila/Leela
Lina
Mira
Priya
Mina
Nikita
Nila/Neela
Rina
Veda
Riya

My Indian/English friend has a gorgeous little Anya. She has been nicknamed all sorts of cute things but I have never heard Lasagna! Wouldn't have occurred to me so you may be overthinking that one Smile

I would pronounce Maya, Muh-Yuh, but that's a European pronunciation.

I like Nishika, Kavika, Namita, Sarita and Anushka.

I really like Maya (whether it's pronounced Maia or Maya) and Anya.

As alternatives how about Mala, Lana or Farrah?

Maya (correct pronunciation Mya, no need to misspell it Hmm) is a lovely name.

What about Layla?

I actually know a little girl called Maya, pronounced My-a who has an English mother and Indian father!

It works perfectly for her Smile

My Indian friend called her daughter Aniya. My sister is Ania but we're Polish descent.
I know an Indian Lata, which is a lovely name.
