I really love it and would have Gene for short. DP doesn't hate it but doesn't exactly love it either. Just wondered if it's a Marmite name.

prepperpig Wed 10-Jun-15 14:51:08

I would say its a marmite name yes. It doesn't conjure up great images for me.

Sophronia Wed 10-Jun-15 14:55:45

I like it

QueenOfThorns Wed 10-Jun-15 14:59:34

I'm afraid I really don't like it. For some reason, it makes me think of this guy, although the character (Rick Moranis in Ghostbusters) was actually called Louis!

sebsmummy1 Wed 10-Jun-15 15:00:44

Ha ha. So it's conjuring up a kind of weak, geeky image?

DrJacoby Wed 10-Jun-15 15:02:54

Gene is a great name.

mrschatty Wed 10-Jun-15 15:03:00

I'm sorry I just think if Eugene from grease! 'Eu-geeene!' It may come back in fashion!

sebsmummy1 Wed 10-Jun-15 15:05:42

I think if the owner of the name is cool it becomes cool. Even Colin could be cool if it belonged to some 6ft 2 surfer dude.

Very Marmite. I'm not actually sure which side I'm on!

My first thought was Ghost Busters but that's not necessarily a bad thing grin

I was just googling the name to see if I could find any famous Eugenes to add some credibility and instead found the following definition in the Urban Dictionary;

A guy with a huge cock who gets all the girls. He is the embodiment of awesome.

Gene Hackman is a Eugene, he's pretty cool grin

Ludways Wed 10-Jun-15 15:23:53

Love it. I lived in the states for several years and over there it is considered quite geeky, but I knew one and he was such a blazing hippy he was cooler than cool.

Didn't Liam Gallagher call one of his ds Gene?

TheFillyjonk Wed 10-Jun-15 15:24:09

Sorry, I get nerdy vibes from Eugene too as I can think of several shows and films with weedy, dorky Eugenes. Gene is a bit cooler, but just sounds a bit like Jean. I don't think this is much of a problem as Jean isn't really used anymore!

QueenOfThorns Wed 10-Jun-15 15:26:29

I'm afraid it is a bit nerd-like to me, yes. But isn't geeky cool these days?

(Can you tell that I have absolutely no idea? grin)

I think of a person called Eugene who was in Big Brother. He was very geeky.

I used to know someone who knew Eugene and was very boastful about it. (Because of his Big Brother fame hmm). I ended up meeting Eugene through the boastful guy, and he was as geeky as he appeared on the TV.

To summarise, no I'm not keen.

QueenOfThorns Wed 10-Jun-15 15:28:30

Ah! Here you go - Gene Simmons - not geeky at all grin

IsadoraQuagmire Wed 10-Jun-15 15:32:40

Of course it's not nerdy or geeky, it's Gene Kelly's name!

QueenOfThorns Wed 10-Jun-15 15:34:52

Also Gene Hunt, possibly the antithesis of geek!

sebsmummy1 Wed 10-Jun-15 15:35:35

I am loving the geeky connotations, so this is making me like it even more!!

SantanaLopez Wed 10-Jun-15 15:37:14

Fucking awful.

ChaiseLounger Wed 10-Jun-15 15:38:50

Beyond awful

SylvaniansAtEase Wed 10-Jun-15 15:41:35

Horrible. Just such a nasal, sicky sound.

Gene is colourless and bland.

sebsmummy1 Wed 10-Jun-15 15:43:14

Ha ha don't hold back girls grin

DipsoHippo Wed 10-Jun-15 15:46:05

My DH's name probably outs self again

He suits it!

Crusoe Wed 10-Jun-15 15:50:55
