Pronunciation help- EVelyn or EVElyn

What it says on the tin really. Evelyn is our provisional girl choice for dc2. We're thinking we can call her Evie or Eva for short. DH hadn't heard it before, I would pronounce it EVelyn but my dad says I'm wrong and says EVElyn. I don't want her having to correct people all the time when she's older.

EVElyn from the north. E v lyn have heard more recently in London, why not just Evie or Eva?

DD1 is EVElyn. DD2 calls her Eve.

Although MIL insists on EVelyn which grates. I think both are accepted ways to pronounce the name but am irritated (very unreasonably) that MIL won't respect our choice.

I would say Evlyn but I think on the whole it's an either/either name. There's no right or wrong pronunciation.

EVelyn, not a fan of the other pronunciation.

I think EVelin is the "correct" pronunciation, coming as it does from Aveline. However there are sufficient EVElins around for that to be considered "correct" now too.

All the ladies I've known with the name have been EVelins, but EVElin somehow sounds more correct for a man. I'm sure that's just me though...

JacobWrestling · 31/05/2015 21:43

Strictly speaking, it's ever-lyn for a woman and eve-lyn for a man.

Thanks everyone. I guess that I'll have to accept that people will pronounce it both ways but at least I know I've not made it up (thanks dad!). We prefer Evelyn as her given name as then she can choose to go by her full name or a nickname.

I prefer Eve-lyn (eev-lin) as this was my grandma's name and I prefer the 'Eve' sound.

But ev-lin or ev-a-lyn are equally correct. You just have to make a choice, but not get annoyed with people using the other pronunciation!

steppemum · 01/06/2015 00:19

I would say both/either. I would probably follow what the person said when they told me her name.

I love it, very nice name

I've heard of EVlyn (lovely name by the way) but never EVElyn if I'm honest. It's only really when people read it anyway. When you introduce her to people it's however you choose to pronounce it. I don't think it would be that much of an issue when she's older x

This was our choice if ds1 had been a girl and the pronunciation stumped us too. We decided eve-a-lyn. I think it lends itself to the nicknames easier that way.

Out2pasture · 01/06/2015 00:25

More familiar with the Ev-a-lin pronunciation.
