Aaliyah is not popular where I am from never heard it, I'm considering different spellings such as
Alea
Aleigha

Not a huge fan but so long as you like it, that's all that matters.

suitefrancaise Fri 22-May-15 16:51:33

Those spellings have a different pronunciation to 'Aaliyah'.

If you like it that's fantastic.

MrsSheRa Fri 22-May-15 16:56:23

Well it just makes me think of the singer who had underage sex with R Kelly sad

It's up to you

LeoandBoosmum Fri 22-May-15 17:01:04

Not keen but if you like it?

To me, the double Aa looks contrived, and it's probably not, but it sounds very much made up. I think Leah is better, for me, anyway.

LeoandBoosmum Fri 22-May-15 17:04:18

As suitefrancaise says, those spellings are not pronounced in the same way. Plus, they look just as contrived/ made up... You'd be forever correcting people. If you really want it, I'd go with a simpler spelling of the original, like 'Aliya which looks nicer to me'. Most people would know how to pronounce that.

I'm not keen on the other spellings, I prefer Aaliyah but maybe because that's the only way I've seen it spelt before. It does make me think of the singer but I don't think that is a problem. To everyone who knows her, it will be your daughters name.

MrsBungle Fri 22-May-15 17:05:37

Joy is a nice name. I'm not keen on Aaliyah personally.

Penguinotterfoxbadger Fri 22-May-15 17:07:49

It's beautiful and I would stick with the original spelling.

Belazu84 Fri 22-May-15 19:26:45

Nice. Stick with Aaliyah though- don't mess with the spelling!

Alyia is an Arabic name and is fairly common in Muslim communities of all backgrounds (Middle Eastern, Pakistani, European).

Can't believe someone up thread said it sounds made up hmm.

It's a nice name op but not keen on the spellings you propose.

WeSailTonightForSingapore Fri 22-May-15 19:40:04

Oh oops, what I said about someone saying the name sounds made up. Just saw they meant the spelling sounds made up. Sorry about that, my mistake, should read more closely!

PinkSquash Fri 22-May-15 19:43:40

Aaliyah was the singer who died when her plane crashed about 1910 years ago.

I would stick to that or Aliya

parsnipbob Sat 23-May-15 08:14:39

Yep, when I see Aaliyah I just think of the singer...

yesiwouldlikefrieswiththat Sat 23-May-15 09:25:40

I like it, would stick to the original spelling though

Only1scoop Sat 23-May-15 09:26:49

Joy is nice

SirChenjin Sat 23-May-15 09:33:02

I just think of the singer and would imagine you were a fan - esp. if it's a name that's not common in your culture.

Sophronia Sat 23-May-15 12:25:09

I prefer Aliyah

VixxFace Sat 23-May-15 12:38:59

Stick to aaliyah although I find it ghetto.

Stinkersmum Sat 23-May-15 12:42:59

Dead RnB singer who shagged R Kelly. Not something I'd chose.

perfectlybroken Sat 23-May-15 12:52:00

It's lovely, commonly used by Muslims but also sounds lovely with joy.

perfectlybroken Sat 23-May-15 12:54:30

It means lofty or sublime, high/tall in a spiritual sense.

perfectlybroken Sat 23-May-15 12:55:36

Al-Ala "the high" being one of the hundred names Muslims use to refer to God, and I think Aaliyah is the female form of that name.
