I know it is really common in Spanish speaking countries but not common here at all and I think it is beautiful. We are not in any way spanish so would you think it odd to see a little girl with (probably!) fair hair and freckles called Carmen?

It's stunning Smile

Spanish names, such ad Lola, are used here in the UK so don't worry too much about that. I'm sure that not every Lola is a dark-haired, olive-skinned little girl.

I know a red-headed, English Carmen and she's never had any issues with her name.

I think it's fine to use in the UK regardless of skin tone! It's a name that feels like it's crossed over into the mainstream so I wouldn't necessarily expect someone who was called it to be Spanish.

I know a girl called Carmen.

A man walks into a bar an a gorgeous woman approaches him "Hi," she says "my name is Carmen because I like cars and men"
He replies: "In that case, my name's Charlie Beer C**t"

OP, I could not finish my post yesterday (DD)...

Nowadays I love my name but did not like it at all when I was a child in Spain in the 70s and 80s (too many old ladies called Carmen, too many of them either single or sanctimonious). I would have loved Emma... but now I hate it!

I have a Carmen at home (dd2) but would have liked to use these two other names (my two favorites out of a longer list I just posted in another thread) instead of Carmen...

Mencía, pronounced more or less like mehn-thee-a
It's a medieval name, used at the time in Castile and Navarra, means hill.

Valme, was my preferred substitute of Carmen prior to start liking my own name.
Our Lady of Valme is the co-saint patron of Dos Hermanas, in Seville. Valme comes from what King Ferdinand III the Saint said when trying to conquer Seville from the moors in 1248, asking for Our Lady’s help: "¡Váleme, Señora, que si te dignas hacerlo, en este lugar te labraré una capilla, en la que a tus pies depositaré como ofrenda, el pendón que a los enemigos de España y de nuestra Santa Fe conquiste!". Basically, help me during the battle and I’ll built a church in this spot.

I'm also a half Spanish Carmen. I also went to school with another girl called Carmen, she was Spanish and had moved here from Spain. It's not rare but not common either. I would say I got called some names at school for my name, such as Camel, or Car- men ! Kids found it funny.
