I love this name but DH says he hates it...keen to get other's opinions. I think it is so pretty but DH says it makes him think of otters?!!

I love it and think it is open to nicknames which is always important as it gives the child/future adult a chance to find something they like (Tillie, Ottie, Lillie)
Similar 'genre' names:
Millicent (Millie)

It's ok. A proper name at least.

Pretty? Not to my eye...maybe if you're a fan of Tilly, which I'm not.

I like it a lot

TinCanSally Sat 07-Feb-15 11:11:34

Love this name it's pretty, feminine, sophisticated and classy all in one. Very versatile and not very common either.
What's not to love?!

ClementineAndCordelia Sat 07-Feb-15 11:51:15

I love this too , but whenever I ask anyone their opinion they usually say it makes them think of Utterly Butterly and others say its a middle class French name- both have put me off a bit .I would definitely still consider it though as it's really pretty and unusual . I like it best when spelt Ottolie .i guess you could have Lottie as a nn too smile

Cornberry Sat 07-Feb-15 12:28:00

Doesn't it sound too much like utterly?

Sophronia Sat 07-Feb-15 12:34:07

I never know how to pronounce it, is it OTT-il-ee or oh-TILL-ee or oh-til-EE? If it's the first one then it reminds me of otters as well.

callamia Sat 07-Feb-15 12:36:33

I imagine that every mumsnet daughter would be called this if inly it weren't for all those prospective fathers vetoing it.
I don't like it much. I think it's cute, but I don't think it sounds like an afult's name.

ag123 Sat 07-Feb-15 12:36:53

Yeah I think I'd pronounce it the first way..!

KoalaDownUnder Sat 07-Feb-15 12:40:25

I've always been confused about the pron too. Is it OH-Tilly or OTT-ily or...what?

I actually just find it a bit confusing and weird.

catsofa Sat 07-Feb-15 12:45:56

I like it. What's wrong with otters? I think otters have a very similar cute/scary/awesome ratio to cats.

GlitzAndGigglesx Sat 07-Feb-15 12:47:18

It sounds like someone with an accent saying utterly. I don't like it but then I don't really like names beginning with O

GotToBeInItToWinIt Sat 07-Feb-15 13:05:21

Don't like it. It just sounds really awkward to my ears.

florascotia Sat 07-Feb-15 13:47:46

Ottilie = originally a German name, and pronounced Ot-tee-lee-yuh.

Now sometimes pronounced different ways in different countries, but I much prefer the original pronounciation.

invisiblecrown Sat 07-Feb-15 14:51:43

It is so awful.

Seriouslyffs Sat 07-Feb-15 14:55:54

No it's lovely. I mooted it here yesterday as an 'alternative to but similar' for Orianna.

StoneFoxMama Sat 07-Feb-15 17:16:08

I'm with flora the German pronunciation is beautiful, sounds a bit like Otteelya to rhyme with Ophelia (or the one I know is pronounced like this) I have heard the other ways but prefer this way.

reuset Sat 07-Feb-15 17:23:16

All very well. But in the UK it's not pronounced that way. It's Ott -il -ee.

I could go onto many threads and wax lyrical about the pronunciation being better from country of origin, but (with the exception being the mangling and part anglicization of clementine which is a bugbear of mine) why bother.

AnnieMorel Sat 07-Feb-15 17:25:39

I like it and it was on our list 12 years ago.

I know 2 - one is 3 and one 7. Both pronounced Ot-il-y.

Alisvolatpropiis Sat 07-Feb-15 23:17:14

I prefer the German pronunciation but suspect you'd have the Devils own job getting people to accept in the UK as the French pronunciation is the route by which the name has become known here.

StoneFoxMama Sun 08-Feb-15 08:46:37

Chill out reuset!

mrsmootoo Sun 08-Feb-15 19:42:43

It's slightly odd. Sounds like it's already been shortened. What about Ottoline?

okeydonkey Sun 08-Feb-15 20:02:20

I like it!

EhricLovesTheBhrothers Sun 08-Feb-15 20:13:48

Don't like it at all.
