What can Mabel be shortened to?

We're keen on Mabel for DD2 (DD1 is Poppy and we also have Archie and Toby). Our only concern is what it could be shortened to as we can't think of anything!!! Our other choices are Ottilie (Tilly) and Violet (Lettie). Any ideas of what a Mabel could be known as?!

I love the name Mabel. Years ago I worked with a woman older than me called Mabel. She was lovely and we called her Mabes. It felt like a really fond nickname if that makes sense.

As the other posters said, Belle or Bella. But why? If you want her to be Mabel, call her Mabel. It's only 2 syllables - it hardly needs a shortened version.

all names end up getting shortened don't they? Even short ones people seem to find a way to create a nickname! Mabel is about all we can think of - Belle?Bella really don't work with our surname (yet oddly Mabel does) plus we know loads of Belles and Bellas. May is sweet but she is due middle of May so I think it might be a bit twee to have her nickname as her birth month. I think maybe I am reading too much into this!

But a nickname is one that evolves, not one you give to your child before they're born!

Just call her Mabel!

I think you're reading too much in to it Smile. I know loads of people whose names are not shortened. Plus nicknames usually just evolve. You won't be able to control what people at school give her!

Also, what do you shorten Archie and Toby to?!

I know two Mabels

One is a great aunt who is always known as Auntie May
The other Mabel helps out in my uncle's pub and is known as Mabs.

Pop, Arch and Tobe! They have family nicknames but when we're out and I need to call them to me quickly it is one syllable all the way! I just can't imagine calling "Mabe!!!!!)

I agree - it doesn't need to, and probably wouldn't be, shortened. Plenty of names don't get shortened - even long names. I know Elizabeths for example that don't get shortened.

You might have shortened your other children's names but that's by choice: you don't have to call her Mabe!

It's a really pretty name

I love Mabs as a shortening but I'm sure it's not everyone's taste.

My DD is a Felicity and noone has attempted to shorten that yet! I imagine they will when she gets to school though.

Our Mabel is usually just Mabel but sometimes Mabes or Maybe-baby or Miss Mabel. We liked it partly because we liked May but have never used that! I think nicknames just evolve so don't worry about it. Mabel is just a gorgeous name.

I have a Mabel and don't usually shorten it. Sometimes Mabes and my mum sometimes calls her Mabs. Always feels funny shouting out "Mabel!" In the park. I love it as a name though and don't know any others.

squoosh Mabel is so much nicer than Violent which sounds too close to Violent for my liking! Confused
