Effy - what could it be short for?

Just to say, I'm not pregnant or ttc currently. I've just been thinking about the name Effy.
There was a character on skins with this name, and then I heard someone on the radio today with it too.

What could it be short for?

CatsClaus Fri 02-Jan-15 15:53:15

Euphemia, Euphegenia ...like Mrs Doubtfire. grin

fuckweasel Fri 02-Jan-15 15:54:30

A diminutive of Euphemia is Effy/Effie.

Brandysnapper Fri 02-Jan-15 15:54:52

Elizabeth I think.

ThinkIveBeenHacked Fri 02-Jan-15 15:54:58

Elphaba

Tbh Id just use Effie but then my DD has a shortened version of a name as I didnt want her name to be the longer version.

FatAmy Fri 02-Jan-15 15:55:11

I think she was called Elizabeth but I'm not sure

BMO Fri 02-Jan-15 15:55:16

I have a feeling the Skins character was Elizabeth.

CaulkheadUpNorth Fri 02-Jan-15 15:57:10

I thought it was Elizabeth, but then doubted myself. Thanks.

pieceofpurplesky Fri 02-Jan-15 15:58:22

Efrata or Evelyn as well as the above

MissMillament Fri 02-Jan-15 16:01:03

Effie Millais was Euphemia. Don't know how you get Effie from Elizabeth tbh.

CaulkheadUpNorth Fri 02-Jan-15 16:02:21

MissMillament! Slight derail, but are you currently wearing a mustard coloured cardigan stained with egg and your fathers spectacles?

There have been a lot of names I've never heard before here, thanks.

MysticMugBug Fri 02-Jan-15 16:02:26

Evangeline, Eve

AuntieStella Fri 02-Jan-15 16:04:24

It's the trad NN for Euphemia, which is a splendid name.

MissMillament Fri 02-Jan-15 16:06:38

I am! Love those books! I have cheated with the name slightly though - someone had already got it (and doesn't use it) so I had to change it by one letter.

mrsmilkymoo Fri 02-Jan-15 16:08:31

Had a neighbour with this name, short for Euphemia.

Lindy2 Fri 02-Jan-15 16:09:02

I'm not sure if I've spelt this correctly but I thought it could be a shortening of Persephone. I do know an Effie where that is actually just her full name so it isn't always short for anything.

Happypogostick Fri 02-Jan-15 16:10:23

Aoife? (Irish name pronounced ee-fa)

GloriousGloria Fri 02-Jan-15 16:16:00

I was going to say Aoife

I know an Aoife who is called Effy for short.

CaulkheadUpNorth Fri 02-Jan-15 16:17:20

You lot are wonderful, thanks. I love Aoife and Elizabeth so I think I'll tell myself it's one of those.

VainVulva Fri 02-Jan-15 19:23:38

Aphra, my beautiful dd's name!

BananaToast Fri 02-Jan-15 19:23:51

I know an Effie short for Felicity.

CosmicDespot Fri 02-Jan-15 19:35:31

I've only known a male Effy, short for Ephraim.

KatieKaye Fri 02-Jan-15 21:25:57

It's a traditional nickname for Euphemia.

Other NNs for Euphemia are Phemie (pronounced "fay-may") and Faye.

Out of the three, Faye is the only one I like. Effie and Phemie just conjure of images of stout older women trundling off to the steamie with a pram full of laundry.
