We're having number five in 12 days and this is our front runner name. I'm slightly worried about pronunciation. What do people think and how would you pronounce it?

ArthurSHappeyChristmas Thu 18-Dec-14 21:27:45

I think it's pronounced Dash-le.

But I'm probably wrong. smile

MaelstromOfLunacy Thu 18-Dec-14 21:28:13

I'd pronounce it Dash - eel

youbethemummylion Thu 18-Dec-14 21:28:45

I would pronounce Dash eeee el and I dont really like it, sorry.

In The Incredibles it's pronounced Dash-ell. I love it.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn Thu 18-Dec-14 21:31:45

I'd pronounce it Dash-eel.

lloydlf33 Thu 18-Dec-14 21:33:53

Don't be sorry if you don't like it lol i love marmite names and undetsnad that other people either love or hate them.

Pronunciation is the only sticking block atm. There are two generally accepted ways

Dash-uhl

and

Dash-yull

I prefer the second but don't dislike the first. If it's a case of just correcting people then they get it the I'm okay with that as we have other children's with name that need explaining initially.

it's one of Santa's reindeer , init?

ArthurSHappeyChristmas Thu 18-Dec-14 21:35:39

I would never have guessed Dash-yull... That sounds weird to me.

lloydlf33 Thu 18-Dec-14 21:35:46

Jasper - yep not heard that one before yawn

youbethemummylion Thu 18-Dec-14 21:39:00

I suppose Dash-yull makes sense in a Daniel (Dan-yull) kind of a way. Is it for a boy or girl?

Footlight Thu 18-Dec-14 21:41:05

Will you call him Dash for short?

I always wish I had called ds this, but hadn't heard of it at the time.

lloydlf33 Thu 18-Dec-14 21:41:34

Mummy lion - you're a star! I've been struggling to find a way to explain the pronunciation and the Daniel example is brilliant! Thank you X

It's for a boy

ArthurSHappeyChristmas Thu 18-Dec-14 21:45:22

Oh I see like Daniel. It doesn't roll off the tongue though I think sh-yuh doesn't flow like n-yuh.

lloydlf33 Thu 18-Dec-14 21:46:21

Yes Dash for short

youbethemummylion Thu 18-Dec-14 21:48:15

Your welcome, and its starting to grow on me especially the Dash nickname grin

I've only ever heard it pronounced Dash-eel.

AuntieStella Fri 19-Dec-14 08:45:25

I've only ever heard it said Dash-eel, and once Dash-ull, in RL.

I like it as a name, and think of Hammett and all the hardboiled detectives.

Alyx80 Fri 19-Dec-14 10:29:02

I say it Dash-ell like in the link above, fab name

shakemysilliesout Fri 19-Dec-14 11:50:01

I think it sounds better in an Americans accent, i don't mind it. Like nn dash.

rockdakazbah Fri 19-Dec-14 12:17:47

I love it. I wanted to name DS2 Dashiell but DH vetoed it. I always thought that the pronunciation is Dash-ell, that's the only way I've heard it pronounced.

BananaToast Fri 19-Dec-14 12:22:02

I would pronounce it Dash-ull but have heard of Dash-iull. Would never have guessed Dash-yull, I find that quite awkward to say.

CheeseBuster Fri 19-Dec-14 12:32:48

It's nasty and sounds like cheap aftershave.
