Explorer boy's name

We really like the name Apsley as a link to Apsley Cherry-Garrard, the youngest member of Scott's team in 1912. He wrote a seminal book on it. Our eldest son has a polar explorer's name and is also quite unusual, so it would fit. What do people think? I'm almost scared to ask ... Thanks!

I don't think I'd want to be called App in this day and age!

Good point.
How about Curiosity? The Mars rovers have done some pretty decent exploring!

Here's a list of arctic explorers - lots of interesting names. Apsley wouldn't be my choice.

That's an interesting list. Of the unusual names I like edgeworth. Apsley isn't very nice IMHO.

Couple of adolphs on the list- I feel sad for them that their name was ruined forever. A bit like how judas ruined the name of the other non evil judas of christs disciples.

I love Edmund. What about Horatio?

I know he doesn't fit the bill btw before anyone jumps in but I love the name.

I like it, when I read the title I first thought Benedict as in Benedict Allen the modern day explorer.

some lovely names on there (leaving aside the fact that some wag has added Jeremy Clarkson Hmm).

I know of someone called Shackleton, nn Shack - not sure if it's his first name or his surname, but cool either way.

Yep. Change your own name to Apsley, and call your child something nice.

Hurray for another Tom Crean fan. He's astonishingly craggy and fabulous in that photo. And it's hard to look hot with a pipe...

OP, do you really want to 'match' your children's names in terms of a linking polar explorer theme? It sounds more like something you'd do when acquiring a pair of guinea-pigs or something. How would you feel as an adult knowing you and your sister had been 'themed' as Martina/Billie-jean because your parents liked tennis?

If you wanted an explorer, and weren't too bothered about the Arctic bit, how about Mungo for Mungo Park? Or Benedict, for Benedict Allen.

There's a lovely long list of explorers here. Covers all sorts of exploration, including space.

Leif, as in Erikson

Falcon, as in Scott's middle name.

I absolutely love A. C-G, but Apsley might work better as a middle name. FWIW, he was known as Cherry, not Apsley.

However, if you want to go for it go for it. There are many many worse names out there.
