Esme, Esmé or Esmée

We have decided to call our little girl Rosie Esme. There seems to be confusion on the pronunciation of Esme, the name is after a family member who pronounced it Ez-mee. We would like it pronounced Ez-may to go with Rosie. Any ideas?

Esmée is the correct spelling for a female Esmé in french. Having said all that I have an Esmé ;)

Stick to Esme. I've only ever heard the name pronounced Ez-mee, but given that it's a middle name and won't be used that much I'd just spell and pronounce it how you like.

I'd go for Esme as it is a middle name, so few people are going to try to pronounce it. Finding accents when typing can be difficult for some people, so you are likely to get it written incorrectly in the uk.

I've known a few Esme's pronounced both Ez-mee and Ez-may. I'm not sure there is a way of spelling it 'correctly for the pronunciation' in this case, I think people will say it differently whichever you go for

It's an adjective, French, which means 'esteemed' or 'beloved'.

If following French language rules, then 'e with accent' for a boy and 'ee with accent on the first e' for a girl.

The é sound is like the e in cafe. It makes an 'ay' sound. So esmé and esmée should be pronounced es-may

Esme would be Esmie

Alternatively you could just called her esmee with no ancient above the e so that the ee makes an ee sound rather then an ay sound
