DH and I can't agree! I've talked myself out of most of these! Finding this naming business really difficult.

Love emmeline beautiful and unusualgrin

Luckystar82 Thu 11-Dec-14 17:45:07

Emmeline is very pretty.

I would just be worried nn would be Emma which I don't like so much.

I think I would like something old fashioned, fairly unusual, but not unheard of as I don't want to burden the child with having to spell it out every time they introduce themselves.

Now I've thought about it, I'd prefer a name which does not have the risk of a nn I don't like. I guess you can't control nns can you?

MonkeyPuzzler Thu 11-Dec-14 17:47:27

I love all your girls names. Of the boys I like Benjamin the best.

Luckystar82 Thu 11-Dec-14 17:57:06

Thanks Monkeypuzzler

I agree. I love all the girls name. I am not sold on any of the boys names except Benjamin, but it is too popular, plus we know people who will think it is after them!

I am finding boys name very difficult. Any suggestions very welcome!

Emmeline is a beautiful name, the others are nice too, except Evelyn which I'm not keen on. I only like Benjamin out of the boys names.

minipie Thu 11-Dec-14 18:33:10

I like all the girls' names except Orla (for some reason I've never really liked O names, that's just me though! and it makes me think of oral).
Evelyn nn Evie is probably my favourite, though Emmeline nn Emmy is close second. Ava is also nice but feels a bit more old womany somehow.

Boys's names, I'm not sure about Franklin as I don't really like Frank, bit too old man for me. I'd probably pick Miles rather than Milo as that way you have the option of the nn Milo when he's little but Miles for when he's more grown up? Benjamin is a great name, always popular and classic.

Noggie Thu 11-Dec-14 18:34:22

I like Benjamin too and girls names except Evelyn. How about martha for old fashioned, easy to spell and no obvious nick name?

diddl Thu 11-Dec-14 18:38:35

Don't like Evelyn.

Only like Milo.

Yorkshirelassreturns Thu 11-Dec-14 18:46:19

Emmeline and Benjamin hands down. Lovely! X

ImperialBlether Thu 11-Dec-14 18:47:54

Do you like Millie as a nickname for Emmeline?

Stumbleine Thu 11-Dec-14 18:48:20

Emmeline and Miles are both lovely names (and have been on my list three times, only to be vetoed by dh!).

TheGirlAtTheJingleBellRockShow Thu 11-Dec-14 19:26:41

Evelyn was on our list - so I love it! Emmeline is lovely too.
Of your boys list I like Benjamin, Franklin is ok, as is Miles. Don't like Milo
I think boys names are always harder than girls.

ataposaurus Thu 11-Dec-14 19:33:49

If you are worried about popularity, don't pick Ava, it has been top 10 for ages! I find Emmeline a bit fussy personally and not keen on Evelyn, there is a pronounciation issue (Eve - Lyn or Evlyn). Orla is nice. How about Ada (was on our list for ds 2 but was a boy! - similar to Ava but less popular).

I like Milo best of your boys names though it feels quite trendy. Benjamin is ok, very popular. Not keen on Miles or Franklin but I like Frank.

CPtart Thu 11-Dec-14 19:55:02

Benjamin by a mile for a boy, it was on my shortlist as was Adam, Luke, Evan, Dominic, Lawrence, Edward, Marcus, Zachary, Isaac.

Evelyn is nice for a girl but only in it's entirety, even then it's very similar to all the millions of Eve's, Evie's, Eva's, Ava's.

CanIBeHappyNow Thu 11-Dec-14 19:58:31

Like Emmeline and Benjamin the best. Lovely names. smile

Kaekae Thu 11-Dec-14 20:00:07

I don't like Orla, I know a little girl called this and it just sounds harsh. I like Ava but very popular.

TheScenicRoute Thu 11-Dec-14 20:00:34

Evelyn and Miles. X

Boobz Thu 11-Dec-14 20:38:32

Orla - not keen
Evelyn - Really like - I like Ev, Evs or Evie as a nn as well
Ava - too popular
Emmeline - Really like - but yes you do have to worry about the shortening if you don't like Emma

Miles - LOVE
Milo - Like, but not as much as Miles
Benjamin - Really like but not unusual enough
Franklin - nope

We have a Kit. I had always thought I would ensure the DC had a "proper long name" (like we do for DDs Penelope and Constance, who we do shorten to Pen and Connie), but in the end I didn't really like Chris, and so if we called him Christopher or Kristian, nn Kit, he might at some point turn into a Chris and I really didn't want that.

So he's just Kit on his passport. Still not sure if we made the right decision..

MunningCockery Thu 11-Dec-14 20:47:56

Surely Emmeline would be shortened to Emmy - not Emma? Children (who usually drive the nn IME) have a tendency to follow the phonic so I suspect your fears re Emma may be misfounded? HTH!

I really love Milo but know it is a bit of a 'marmite' name IYKWIM - some (lie me) LOVE it, others think it's uper snooty and hate it. My considered view is fuck 'em and go with what you wantsmile

Oh, and congrats too BTWflowers When are you due?

burgatroyd Thu 11-Dec-14 20:48:21

Emmeline will be mistaken for the more popular Emily.

But its the best out if all your options.

Kitsmummy Thu 11-Dec-14 20:48:24

Boobz, I have a Kit too, great name

MunningCockery Thu 11-Dec-14 20:48:32

*LIKE me, even.

Kitsmummy Thu 11-Dec-14 20:49:28

I also have an Orla so that would be my choice grin

ChristmasEveSteve Thu 11-Dec-14 20:50:34

Emmeline is lovely! How about Benedict for your boys list?
