To think Raya is made up and just awful, after receiving news of a beautiful baby girl. All I can think about is the name?

I absolutely agree.. Raya? It reminds me of Rayon.... Wash at 30 degrees and dry away from sunlight. . Stupid name

You're only a bitch if you expresss your opinion out loud to the parents or their close friends/family

Completely agree it does sound made up and slightly naff!

Oh I would never say it to anyone close to my friend or to her. Which is why I have come to the anonymous world of mn to air my opinion and seek others.

Never come across the name before so questioned wether it has been made up? Does anyone know?

think it's arabic or middle eastern, i've certainly had customers come thru work with the name; i quite like it but it sounds a bit nicknamey for me

I like it! But nothing wrong with a negative opinion you keep to yourself. Names are so subjective.

575th most popular last year so there's a fair few about too!

I know 2 Raya's.

One is in her 40's and one is in her teens so its definitely not "made up", although that said surely all names were made up and ridiculous at some point?

IHeartKingThistle · 10/12/2014 23:00

I know one spelled Reia. I really like it.

PitchWrapped · 10/12/2014 23:04

I think its beautiful, strong and feminine and not too out there

MinceSpy · 10/12/2014 23:10

Raya is the Israeli for friend, Greek foe wise guardian or Arabic for wise to all so not a,'made up' name.

It's not that bad compared to some I've seen on bottles of coke

Report
TheLeftovermonster · 10/12/2014 23:20

Definitely not made up!

Report
burgatroyd · 11/12/2014 09:55

I like it.

It sounds Indian to me rather than made up so perhaps it might be tactful not to express your views openly in case it isn't made up.

Report
Legionofboom · 11/12/2014 10:07

I've never heard it before but I don't think it sounds 'made up'. More like a shortening for something.

I like it.

Report
LingDiLong · 11/12/2014 10:10

I like it too, it doesn't sound made up to me either.

I have been known to have similar bitchy moments though. Most recently at my child's Christmas concert yesterday where there was a child listed in the programme as being called 'Lemoni'.

I only bitched in my head though. And on here.

I think it sounds quite nice. There are far worse names out there, Harriet for example.

Report
mrsfarquhar · 11/12/2014 10:32

I think its lovely and has meaning.

And ofcourse, expressing your opinion on a site as big and ubiquitous as this is very little different to saying it to the new parents themselves so yes you are.

Having googled it, it's from a book apparently - Captain Correlli's Mandolin. It still sounds too descriptive to be a name to me though!

Report
StetsonsAreCool · 11/12/2014 11:18

I wouldn't use it personally, but I think it's really pretty!

As is Lemoni. It's the little girl's name in Captain Corelli's Mandolin, one of my favourite books ever. Again, wouldn't use it myself but I'd have absolutely no problem with anyone else using it.

I think everybody hears a name once in a while where they think - really?! wtf?! Though don't they?
