Orla Yves - french middle name thoughts!

Hi mummies,

We have been pondering over our girls middle name. Originally Orla Rose but starting to think it's too common (MIL is a Rosemary) Husbands grandmother is french - we decided a french middle name would be nice. Thoughts on

Orla Yves (pronounced Eve)

Orla Odette (husbands grandmother)

Or still Orla Rose

Yves is a boys name.
Orla Rose is the best of those.

Just adding my voice to the 'Yves is a boy's name' cohort. The French version of Eve is Eve, with an accent on the first 'e', and pronounced, roughly,'Ev'.

Orla is lovely, but the lack of 'r' pronunciation (assuming you're English with a non-rhotic accent, OP) makes it 'Ola', which isn't so nice...

Orla Yves is a very odd combination indeed for reasons explained by other posters.

Orla Odette isn't great either.

I rather like Orla Yvette actually!

I think Orla is quite a different 'style' of name to many French names, so it might be tricky to find one that goes well.

If you're thinking Orla Odette... I hope your surname does not begin with 'H'!

Yves you cannot give her!

Orla Frances?
Orla Francoise?

There is something a bit odd about a clearly Irish name followed by a clear
Y French name. Yves is a no no as it's a male name but actually most of the others are lovely names and as I think middle names are a bit pointless anyway, go for it!just not yves.

Orla Helene (with the accents- don't know how to do them)

Why not just Orla Eve?

Apart from the fact that Yves is a boy's name, a middle name starting with a vowel doesn't really flow after Orla (which is lovely). I'd go for a middle name starting with a consonant. If you like French names how about
Orla Jeanne
Orla Claire
Orla Celine
Orla Sylvie

Beangarda, people with non-rhotic accents do mark r's sometimes!

It wouldn't be Ola in my accent, more like Aw -luh

Agree Yves is a boy's name.

Awla is just as incorrect as Ola. The R does not have a W sound.

Isn't Yves a boy's name?

GreatAuntDinah · 11/12/2014 13:35

yes, as practically every other PP has already pointed out Grin

Orla Yvette

I agree consonants work best though. I'd also pick something that's both a French and a UK name, so it doesn't contrast too much with Orla.

Orla Madeleine
Orla Vivienne
Orla Juliette
Orla Marianne
Orla Clementine

Orla Yves is odd, I agree with others. Strange to have very Irish + very French, Yves is a boy's name, and they don't flow (it sounds like 'or leave'). Maybe the Orla Claire suggestion would work as Clare could be French or Irish (whichever spelling you prefer).
