What do you think about the name Lola? I quite like it but something is holding me back...

ArsenicSoup Wed 26-Nov-14 07:56:44

Apart from the Kinks song and the Barry Manilow song?

KatieKaye Wed 26-Nov-14 07:58:34

Her name was Loka, she was a showgirl...!

MollyBdenum Wed 26-Nov-14 08:02:13

I know an adult and a child Lola. They are both lovely. The adult is a scientist, not a showgirl.

I know a few aged about 2 to 9, but my defaults are the Lolas made infamous in song.

Short for Dolores, which is short for Maria de Dolores ((Virgin) Mary of Sorrows).

Famous old cabaret song (Marlene Dietrich) 'They call me naughty Lola...'

PoppyAmex Wed 26-Nov-14 08:16:36

Yep, a nickname for Dolores.

sillymillyb Wed 26-Nov-14 08:23:00

She is Charlie's sister, or a show girl... Sorry!

LidlMermaid Wed 26-Nov-14 08:27:13

I love it but in my head it has stripper associations so I used it for my dog and called my DD something else.

Much loved by the trendys in France, though it seems to have peaked (most Lolas I know are upper primary).

GoodboyBindleFeatherstone Wed 26-Nov-14 08:34:44

Transvestite picking up unsuspecting young men in bars.

"Lola" by the Kinks. Great song though grin.

Doublethecuddles Wed 26-Nov-14 08:36:24

Just think of " Charlie and Lola!" Sorry

DurhamDurham Wed 26-Nov-14 08:38:53

I like it for a little girls but not quite so sure about it for an actual grown up person. It's not a very 'substantial' name.

Just asked dh and he started singing the song, the rubbish song by Barry rather than the good one by the Kinks.

JimmyCorkhill Wed 26-Nov-14 09:24:28

Call her Dolores (love it!) and Lola for a nickname. Then if anyone is snotty about Lola you can say "actually, her name is Dolores." God, I am really loving Dolores. Need another DD now grin

KERALA1 Wed 26-Nov-14 09:27:14

Never understood the popularity - manages to be both seedy and insubstantial. How can you hold a gorgeous newborn and name her Lola?! Feel the same about Scarlett

shakemysilliesout Wed 26-Nov-14 09:35:14

I know a few little Lola's- don't like it much. Delores is ok. Was that the name of whoopi goldbergs character in sister act? Wasn't she a showgirl in that movie? Fair play to try and reclaim the name Lola though.

Mammanat222 Wed 26-Nov-14 13:55:01

Tell me about Lola

She was a showgirl, with yellow feathers in her hair

Or yes a transvestite (my fave Kinks song, in-fact one of my fave songs ever)

shoobidoo Wed 26-Nov-14 14:03:49

Really dislike it, sorry.

Dolores or Delilah is ok.

DealForTheKids Wed 26-Nov-14 14:12:24

My friend has a kitten called Lola.

Completely agree up thread about the fact it manages to be both seedy and insubstantial!

squoosh Wed 26-Nov-14 14:21:08

Yep, I think it's too sexy a name for a baby. It's the kind of name people adopt in a ummmm, showbiz career. Of the dancing variety.

WD41 Wed 26-Nov-14 15:19:13

Showgirls and transvestites

Also too similar to Lolita for my liking.

TempsPerdu Wed 26-Nov-14 15:49:28

'Seedy and insubstantial' sums it up perfectl for me! I too get either Barry Manilow or Charlie and Lola. And I think all of the Lola/Lila/Lily type names are on their way out now anyway.

burgatroyd Wed 26-Nov-14 19:10:36

Far too sexy!
