Hi there first baby boy arriving Jan.

Wondered what people thought of the name Malo?

Chloe01mum Sat 22-Nov-14 20:50:40

Prefer Milo, Malo reminds me of marshmallows

JakeyBurd Sat 22-Nov-14 20:53:23

I like it. Very old, but pleasantly different. Go for it!

sejt Sat 22-Nov-14 20:55:02

Estas loco?

NotTodaySatan Sat 22-Nov-14 20:55:34

Muy muy malo.

AuntieStella Sat 22-Nov-14 20:55:36

I know it's a saint, but my first (and quite strong) association was the ferry.

DramaAlpaca Sat 22-Nov-14 20:58:43

Not good, sorry. I wouldn't know whether to pronounce it MAH-lo or MAY-lo. And yes, it means 'bad' in Spanish.

Milo is fine.

Applefallingfromthetree2 Sat 22-Nov-14 21:01:27

Milo is a popular chocolate drink in the Far East!

squoosh Sat 22-Nov-14 21:15:38

Reminds me Saint-Malo the lovely walled town in France.

I quite like it to be honest.

CaptainAnkles Sat 22-Nov-14 21:16:21

No, es muy malo.

ClashCityRocker Sat 22-Nov-14 21:17:21

I'd worry it would get shortened to Mal.

JakeyBurd Sat 22-Nov-14 21:36:28

Does the Spanish meaning matter? Unless the OP plans to live in a Spanish-speaking country then few will make such a connection.

sejt Sat 22-Nov-14 21:39:03

I'd say it does yes.

Everybody knows un poco de espanol

Even if you don't know spanish, it's the start of malignant, malevolent, malady etc.... 'mal' feels like bad even without a word of spanish surely?

LadyIsabellaWrotham Sat 22-Nov-14 21:40:16

I would rather be
in an apple tree
than a naughty boy
in adversity

It's a memorable one if you've ever learned Latin, or watched The Turn of the Screw.

JakeyBurd Sat 22-Nov-14 21:58:50

I suppose it depends how your mind works sejt! I know Spanish but I didn't make the association until it was brought up.

I'm sure that parents who chose other names starting with Mal, e.g. Malcolm, didn't feel they had a bad vibe. Although saying that, there aren't that many names starting with MAL, are there? Time to encourage some, perhaps? smile

IHateHelloKitty Sat 22-Nov-14 21:59:56

I like it but I do not think it will work well outside Brittany.. Maybe try Maël instead?

Gruntbaby Sat 22-Nov-14 22:15:09

There's quite a few in France.

GreatAuntDinah Sun 23-Nov-14 11:14:58

We considered it for DS as DH is Breton but decided against because of the. Spanish thing.

GreatAuntDinah Sun 23-Nov-14 11:16:51

And you get Milo hot choc all over Africa too!

MyOwnJungle Sun 23-Nov-14 11:27:55

5 mentions of the spanish thing on a thread with 19 messages

akalancelot Sun 23-Nov-14 11:55:55

Thanks everyone - I was aware of the spanish translation.
