We don't know if we're having a girl or a boy, but since having DD we've always loved Margot for a second girl. Thing is, our DD is called Edith (she gets called Edie) and, although I've never seen the film, I'm aware these are main characters in Despicable Me. Do you think people would make the connection?

CalmAndConfused Fri 07-Nov-14 08:28:59

I wouldn't make the connection.

I think they are lovely names and wouldn't have made the connection.

BlueberryWafer Fri 07-Nov-14 08:30:12

I never made the connection and I've seen both films smile

Twittwooo Fri 07-Nov-14 08:32:26

Thanks! I didn't think most people would but my husband disagrees! He hasn't seen it either though ..

PetShopGirl Fri 07-Nov-14 08:35:03

I watched Despicable Me yesterday with my DS and wouldn't have made the connection!

UriGeller Fri 07-Nov-14 08:35:08

Gorgeous names! Margot was on our shortlist but a friend named their baby Margot so we didn't sad but smile for them!

Margot can be shortened to Maggie as well which is just lovely.

Nice name but beware about the different pronunciations, the French way (Mar-goh) vs the German (Mar-gott).

Twittwooo Fri 07-Nov-14 08:41:09

Thanks everyone, especially petshopgirl - if you watched it yesterday and didn't make the connection that's pretty good for us! I'm aware of different pronunciations - I like the t spelling, but I know some people might not realise it should be silent so we could always go with margo if it feels like an issue I guess.

devoncreamtea Fri 07-Nov-14 08:52:05

no don't do that! Margot is the right spelling and it only takes one reminder to correct a mispronounciation, I don't think most people will get it wromg anyway. Lovely names!

Twittwooo Fri 07-Nov-14 09:18:55

You're right Devon - I don't think we'd actually deviate from the original spelling anyway. Thanks all!

dorasee Fri 07-Nov-14 09:23:37

I was just thinking yesterday what a lovely name Margot is.

CruCru Fri 07-Nov-14 09:34:14

Margot is v ray nice.

Artandco Fri 07-Nov-14 09:37:17

Margot was in our list. But we have boys!

A friend has now named her child this but it's spelt Margaux

loislines Fri 07-Nov-14 09:43:58

Margot and Edith are lovely together. Don't change from the original spelling though. As a previous poster said, you'll only need to correct people once and I think most people would pronounce it right anyway.

5madthings Fri 07-Nov-14 09:46:09

I have seen the films a million times and I didn't make the connection. I think madthing4 who is six would as he is obsessed but in a "wow cool names like despicable me kids" way.

Also as your kids are little now it won't be so popular among their age group.

Lovely name, go for for it.

RosieProbert Fri 07-Nov-14 09:49:19

I want this but DH has vetoed it
Beautiful name

AWombWithoutAFoof Fri 07-Nov-14 09:54:10

I'm afraid I'd make the connection straight away, sorry!

Sophronia Fri 07-Nov-14 12:46:12

I've seen the films but I didn't make the connection. I think the names are beautiful together.

BumgrapesofWrath Fri 07-Nov-14 12:48:55

Love the name, and didn't make the connection!

SomeSunnySunday Fri 07-Nov-14 14:45:41

I would (and did) make the connection, but I have seen the Despicable Me films lots and lots of times (slightly obsessed small boys!). I don't think that it matters though, most people won't be all that familiar with Despicable Me and it will soon be forgotten. Lovely name!

gnlight Fri 07-Nov-14 14:59:37

Gorgeous name, I didn't make the connection and most people won't. Go for it!

DecaffTastesWeird Fri 07-Nov-14 16:02:28

Never would have made the connection. I love the name!

Chatty987 Fri 07-Nov-14 16:14:08

Do it!

MehsMum Fri 07-Nov-14 16:21:04

Art, does your friend know that Margaux is a type of wine - a very nice red!
