Help needed please! Final name choice for our new baby boy- Arlo, Finn, Bertie or Joe?

Hi there, we've just given birth to our first child, a beautiful baby boy. We're absolutely delighted to welcome him into the world, however we can't decide between our top 4 names and need a bit of help. Your thoughts appreciated! Surname is quite long and difficult to spell so needs to be taken into consideration!

Our final 4:

  • Arlo
  • Bertie (to be christened Albert)
  • Joe
  • Finn

Thanks!
Debbie

I love them all except Joe.

I have a Finn and I'm a Deborah, so I vote for that!

Congratulations!

They are all lovely, except Joe....bit dull IMO.

I ADORE Arlo (I have one Wink ) and Bertie & Finn were also on our lists.

Finn is gorgeous but popular, and Bertie is wonderful but was vetoed by DP.

I love Finn,
I prefer Albie to Bertie but Albert is great as it is.
I really like Joe always have done.
I don't like Arlo much.

Finn is far far too popular. It's up there with Noah as names du jour that are going to date really badly.

Arlo is nice.
Bertie is a bit ridiculous to my ear.
Joe is a great solid name.

But most names will date. All on this list apart from Joe will more than likely date at some point.
Does it matter?

my son and nephew are both on your list Grin

It does to me.

I wouldn't give my child a name that is at the peak of a current trend. It smacks of a lack of imagination and sheep mentality.

I don't think Joe, Albert or Arlo are having a similar zeitgeist moment right now.

Bertie and Arlo are also of the moment.

You would have to stick to Edward, James and Joseph to be sure to avoid any hint of faddish-ness.

Only the true classics never date. Albert goes in and out of fashion. Not like James.

Finn is my vote too.

Congratulations! Smile

I never really understand the comments about names dating. What does it mean exactly?

I have a Finn and have met NO ONE else with that name, so no idea where the 'it's too popular' comes from!!
Must be regional or not true. It never appears that high in any of the top name lists either.

So....Finn or Arlo.

There is a town in Essex called Harlow and it's all I can think of when I hear Arlo, sorry. And I know 2 little boys with that name.

I'd go with Albert to give you options later.

Congrats on your blue bundle!

Congratulations. I'd go for Bertie, it's bump's nick name & would be his name if it wasn't for the long surname starting Be.

Thanks for all the comments, this is really helpful. Tbh we keep going back and forth on all these names - Finn and Joe are lovely, perhaps a bit safe (not necessarily a bad thing given we have an unusual surname). Bit worried about popularity of Finn and don't like the idea of him being one of three or four in his class.

Bertie Beharrell has a certain ring to it. Only concern is can he grow up with it and is too strong a personality in itself? As for Arlo, love the name but with an unusual surname is it too much?

Decisions decisions! Need it bite the bullet soon!

Bertie is v cool and not as common as Joe/ Finn. Not a fan of Arlo myself but prefer it to the others. Vote for Bertie here!

I like Arlo best - very cool, and love Arlo Guthrie - but suspect it could be very of the moment and a bit faddy. If this doesn't bother you, I'd go for it. Personally I much prefer Flynn to Finn, which I think has been done to death, as has Joe.

Bertie is cute, but to me Bertie Beharrell sounds like something out of a P.G. Wodehouse novel!

Love Bertie. The best by far. Makes me think of Colin Firth in The King's Speech.

I know five Finns who live within three streets of me. It is SO popular here.

Joe is nice but dull.

Don't like Arlo. Sorry.

Congratulations!
