You can predict how popular your dcs name will be in 25 years in magazine My DSs name barely registers even though I would say its a classical name.

What I found more interesting was the article on why names become popular they used Noah as a case study. One of my favourite teachers growing up has my sons name, I am sure subconsciously I was inspired by him.

Neither of your links work.

TheXxed Tue 13-May-14 11:48:17

Ahhhhhhhh give me a second. Sorry.

TheXxed Tue 13-May-14 11:51:42

Guardian article on why names become popular.

Time magazine name popularity predictor.

burgatroyd Tue 13-May-14 12:19:14

Very interesting!!! Love things like this. Thanks op! One of my dds name didn't appear even though it to s a obvious but lesser known name and the other is on the decline.

TheXxed Tue 13-May-14 12:25:06

Thanks burgatroyd. My sons name peaked in the 70s.

TheWholeOfTheSpoon Tue 13-May-14 12:30:15

The peak link refers to names in the US though, doesn't it?

TheXxed Tue 13-May-14 12:40:35

Your right spoon. There is a link between name popularity in the states and in the united kingdom. Trying to find the link, the gist of the article was that name trends in the US were replicated in the UK a few years later.

gurningpug Tue 13-May-14 12:41:21

yep it's for the US. UK name trends are often very different

rootypig Tue 13-May-14 12:43:25

It has not, nor ever will be, popular grin

rootypig Tue 13-May-14 12:44:03

*has not been blush

5madthings Tue 13-May-14 12:46:52

My dds name is ok but the name she would have ebeen had she been a boy is set to be popular apparently.. If we ever have another boh we still want to use the name but am pissed the Lego movie will maybe make it popular!

TheXxed Tue 13-May-14 12:54:16

Having a popular can be a good thing, in my year group there were 9 Emma's. And they were like a ready made friendship group, they entered into the school talent show together always took group photos on school trips. They had other friends but they would make a point of getting together every now and again.

I was jealous I have a very unique and wished my name was a little more popular.

Martorana Tue 13-May-14 12:56:00

I have an 18 year old Grace. Classic, timeless but really unusual we thought that was in 1995!

MrsMarigold Tue 13-May-14 12:56:31

I can't get the tool to work - how did you do it?

TheWholeOfTheSpoon Tue 13-May-14 12:57:15

5Mad, is it Emmett?!

tryingtocatchthewind Tue 13-May-14 13:03:58

I love Dr Carter!

TheXxed Tue 13-May-14 13:31:07

Marigold there is a search box in the top left hand corner under the headline. The name the chart will then show the name popularity on the chart below.

tammytoby Tue 13-May-14 14:19:06

They're predicting Gertrude will rise in popularity.

Stokey Tue 13-May-14 14:20:25

Marigold it may not work if you're putting an unusual name in.

DD1s name didn't register, DD2 peaked in 2002 and my name peaked in 1990 much higher than DD2 (I was born in 1974!)

SquirrelledAway Tue 13-May-14 16:50:07

Hmmm ... both my boys have popular names - top ten in the years they were born, but not according to that "predictor".

TheXxed Tue 13-May-14 17:18:09

I love the name Gertrude, I always wanted a cool nickname like Rudi.

5madthings Tue 13-May-14 17:23:09

Yes the name dd would have been is Emmett, if we ever have aneither boy it's still our favorite name.

thexx my ds4 is called Rudi!

My dds name was not on their list at all.

Aboyandabunny Tue 13-May-14 17:27:14

Not very, I suspect. Just like it is now. We liked it though.

raisintwist Tue 13-May-14 17:44:14

DS's name is more popular in the US than in the UK, but it's still quite a flat line. It last peaked in 1991. It will decline as a baby name every year from now through 2020.

My own name peaked in 1965 and will next peak in 2035. It's a proper 70s name!

I'm not sure if parents want a popular name for their child or not, DS's is pretty rare and I like that, but some other mums have been hmm about it.
