The name Lyra? As in the character of the same name of the Philip Pullman 'Dark Materials' trilogy (for those who have read it)? I'm looking for a girls name which is feminine without being 'cutesy', and not overly common without being bizarre?

Its beautiful and the character is wonderful. DS loves her.
Did you know its also a constellation of stars discovered by Ptolemy?

It's a weak, watery name to me.

Bowlersarm Thu 08-May-14 13:12:58

I like it.

Love it, love it, love it. Wanted to use it myself but dh vetoed it for being too similar to my own name sad

I love it

squoosh Tue 06-May-14 14:58:51

It's inoffensive but I don't love it and do hear 'lycra'.

skinmysunshine Tue 06-May-14 14:50:46

I love it too.

Is it pronounced Lie-ra or Lee-ra? In any case it reminds me of Lycra, sorry.

meh, you could do worse.

I know a girl called Lyra and she is the most striking little girl ever, blonde hair and almost grey blue eyes.
In short, I love it! Haha

maggiethemagpie Sun 04-May-14 21:47:40

love it!

I love it. It is on my shortlist for DC2, and I think it might be one of the few girl's names on my list that I will be able to convince DH of.

I live near hattersley

I don't associate Lyra with Myra hindley

That is just silly

Graciejoylove8 Sun 04-May-14 00:04:06

Love Lyra. I know one (born in the 70's) and it's gorgeous on her. Has a sister Giselle, which is lovely too.

Whenwillwe3meetagain Sat 03-May-14 22:36:41

Fair enough Etihad different importance if hindley was near you and the collective history of the community.

Ethiad Sat 03-May-14 21:11:03

Good point well made Whenwill3, I think it was a gut reaction, which when it comes to names can useful to consider, but probably influenced a lot by living just outside Hattersley, and chances are that wouldn't apply to the OP

florascotia Sat 03-May-14 21:04:12

Do not wish to offend, but you did ask. Am not really a fan of ANY name so closely related to a fashionable book/film/tv series. Philip Pullman = undoubtedly a force for good, but I don't like his novels.

Before Pullman, Lyra was the name of a constellation. Before that, the word meant harp or lyre.

Whenwillwe3meetagain Sat 03-May-14 21:04:10

Ethiad will you rule out Rose (west) too and any other murderess name ie Anne or Amelia?
I think Lyra is different enough from Myra for people to not associate the name w her.

Ethiad Sat 03-May-14 20:56:14

It looks nice, but if it rhymes with Myra (as in Hindley) then I personally wouldn't use it.

Whenwillwe3meetagain Sat 03-May-14 20:46:01

My DH suggested it the other day and it's really growing on me. He doesn't like many girls names do was amazed he came up w this. I'm still thinking Cleo is my fave but I really like Lyra too.

CPtart Sat 03-May-14 20:43:52

Too much like Lycra, my first thought too.

BikeRunSki Sat 03-May-14 20:43:39

I like it. I know one, Who is about 3.
