Thoughts on boy's name shortlist

DC2 is due in May and we are struggling to come up with a name if it is a boy (we don't know if it is a boy or a girl).

We have a shortlist but don't feel strongly about any of the names and seem to have a problem with most of them. On the shortlist are:

Toby - not sure if we'd use Tobias on BC or just Toby.
Oliver - popularity puts me off and I can't work out whether nn would be spelt Ollie or Olly. Would it get annoying having to correct it all the time?
Rafferty - am inclined to think this will date but I do like it.
Frederick - as with Oliver, I can't decide whether nn would be spelt Freddie or Freddy.
Giles - a pretty uncommon name and I can't work out why.
Monty - will this make everyone think dog rather than boy?!
Rupert - the bear connection.

What do people think?

Any other suggestions are welcome - I seem to like names that end in ie/y but, with the exception of Oliver, prefer ones which aren't as popular as Archie, Alfie, Charlie etc. Names we have considered and discounted or can't use include Murray, Barnaby, Digby, Humphrey and Percy.

Many thanks!

Forgot Max - like that too.

Thank you for all the responses - it's useful to get opinions on the names as we're not discussing them with anyone in RL.

The name I just can't get my head round is Giles! I'm not too bothered by the Farmer Giles association and appreciate that it is perhaps on the "posher" end of the scale but don't think it is any more so than Miles, for example, (which has also been suggested), yet Miles is much more popular. Food for thought!

Like Fergus, rest are a bit posh for me. Though actually Giles isn't too bad. Prefer Miles and it isn't seen as posh in Scotland.

How about:

Albert/Albie or Bertie

some of these are a bit posh for me too but seem to fit with your other names.

Love Rupert and am surprisingly fond of Giles, but not sure how workable it is irl. Like Oliver and Frederick a lot (but hate Freddie/Freddy).

Roderick maybe instead of Frederick?

sparkbubbles Tue 18-Mar-14 20:42:02

What about Milo?

Toby is awful and Tobias even worse imo. So drippy, like Timmy.

No offense intended.

I like Fergus, nn Gus.

Toby - Reasonable, but I would definitely use Tobias on BC because Toby is too nicknamey/informal.
Oliver - I liked Oliver too, but DP vetoed it. I didn't worry about the NN spelling because I was planning on calling him 'Oliver' anyway and figured he would probably change his mind at some point on how he wants to spell his NN himself when he is older.
Rafferty - I didn't realise this was a name, it sounds like a synonym for grumpy "don't go all rafferty on me".
Frederick - I like this one, and Freddy/Freddie is so cute on a little boy. grin
Fergus - I like it, seems like a good strong name.
Giles - I can't disassociate it from Giles the librarian in Buffy but DC's generation will not get the reference anyway so no comment.
Monty - I like it but agree it does sound a bit dog-ish.
Max - I like it, it's quite a power name.
Rupert - Far too twee for me.

Tobias nn Toby - is lovely.
Oliver nn Oli - is lovely.
Rafferty - not keen
Frederick nn Freddy/Freddie - ok
Fergus - don't like
Giles - I don't like giles, but I do like Miles!
Monty - don't like
Max - ok, but bit boring
Rupert - love, love, love but wasn't brave enough to use it myself

I know a family with an Oliver (Ollie), Freddie and a Rafferty. All gorgeous boys and the combination works well.

Britchic Tue 18-Mar-14 21:48:59

Toby - quite nice
Oliver - yep too popular
Rafferty - love this
Frederick - hmmmm
Fergus - not keen
Giles - don't like, but could be due to it being an ex's name!
Monty - don't like
Max - love
Rupert - quite nice

How about... Sebastian, Hugo, Jasper, William?

mrsbug Tue 18-Mar-14 21:57:25

I like Frederick best
Followed by Max

Toby- Love it especially with Tobias on bc
Oliver- so popular
Rafferty- love it
Frederick- it's ok
Fergus- love it
Giles- sounds very posh
Monty- sounds very posh and twee
Max- meh
Rupert- don't like it and very posh

Yes, go with Giles! I know a very handsome Giles in his 30s.

Otherwise, Fergus or Rupert. I'm so bored of Toby and Ollie.

HippoCritic Wed 19-Mar-14 04:15:08

I love Oliver, never met one actually. I love Ollie as a nickname so much, btw.

Toby- I like Tobias, but not Toby, sounds a bit dull, sorry.

Rafferty- love it, and the nn Rafi/Raffi.

Frederick- sensible sounding, kind of a solid option. I don't like or dislike it iyswim, it just is. Would fit a lot of people, loads of nickname potential but would be more the sort of name I'd use if I honesty couldn't decide, as a safe name if no name particularly stood out?

Fergus- really dislike.

Giles- posh and old, imo, so sounds a bit odd for a kid.

Monty- a bit too cutesy, posh.

Max- strong and handsome sounding.

Rupert- sounds dated and posh. Really dislike it, sorry.

So I LOVE Rafferty, Max and Oliver, but prefer Oliver. smile

Some interesting suggestions - quite liking Gregory and I do like Jeremy, although it is the name of an old boss which puts me off - shame though!

I think we're going to take Monty off the list - just too dog like. At least we're making progress!

CleverOl10 Wed 19-Mar-14 15:35:10

We have an Oliver who is Ollie and love it!
Like Toby, would be on my list if it hadn't been a family dog name.
Husband is Gregory and he loves Greg but hates Gregory.
Not keen on Freddie.
Miles is better than Giles. Not sure why.

jellybeans Wed 19-Mar-14 15:56:27

Toby - nice
Oliver - too popular
Rafferty - dislike
Frederick - dislike
Fergus- dislike
Giles - dislike
Monty - dislike
Max- great name
Rupert - dislike
