Baby names

So nearly decided!

hubby and I are so close to finalising a name for our daughter due in June, sister of James (Jamie) Christopher.

Helena/Heli Kate
Alexandra Kate
Rosanna/Rosie Kate
Penelope/Penny Kate

I also really like the spelling Cate, but DH is unsure.
Another big issue for us is that Alexandra may get shortened to Lexi at school. We both adore Alexandra but really don't like Lexi. I think Ali is a cute name, so I would call her that myself but of course there is no control over what her peers with call her. Similarly with Penelope, I love Penny, hate Nelly!

All lovely names! My favourite is Helena and Heli is a lovely nn. I think if you really dislike Lexi, then going for Alexandra may just be too risky. I know a few Ali's who are Alexandra's but I also know a few Lexi's who are Alexa or Alexandra. I think if you raise her as Ali, then she may even introduce herself as that when she starts school? So people will just automatically call her Ali? I'm an Elizabeth but was called Beth pretty much from birth so when I started school I just went as Beth, not Elizabeth, so there was no chance of anyone calling me Lizzy as a nn. Usually when you start school the teacher will ask the "preferred" name so perhaps she could just start school as Ali? Just a thought!

Rosie is sweet, but for ME personally just a little too "twee" but I'm funny like that. I also think Penny is very sweet but same issue with Lexi/Nellie so again perhaps raise her as a Penny.

Heli is so going to get helicopter names. Just saying. And it rhymes with smelly.

Yes, Heli Kate sounds a bit like helicopter to me.

Helena is a lovely name, but not with Kate.

Love Rosanna and Alexandra.

I like Helena and Alexandra best. No-one will shorten it to Lexi unless you do - it's a less natural nn than Alex or Ali IMO.

Alexandra Cate is beautiful I really like the spelling with C its softer somehow and prettier

I adore all four of your first names! If really pushed I would probably put them in the order of Helena, Penelope, Rosanna then Alexandra.

As suggested above I prefer Cate to Kate. It feels more finished and like less of a nick name to me somehow.

Alexandra and Rosanna for me.

Heli sounds like helicopter and Hell sounds like well, what it says on the tin really. A lovely name I agree, but wouldn't really like those nicknames.

Penelope is pretty but I really don't like Penny as it's a real item, not a nn to me but that's only my opinion.

How about Alexandra Penelope?

Helena. I wouldn't worry about Heli - no one will call her that! Never heard a Helena being called that.

I do like Alexandra as well but not Lexi

Rosanna Kate. With nickname Rosa

Alexandra is the best, but would agree with other posters and say that Alex is more an inevitable nickname than Lexi. Lexi to me has only come about in the past few years, whereas most of the Alex's I know are all Alexandra's. So perhaps decide if you can cope with that as a the nickname option as well.

I like Rosanna best, nn Rosie or Rosa.
Helena is quite nice, but don't like Heli (she'll end up as Hels!)
I am undecided on Penelope, I think I like it though.
I'm really not a fan of Alexandra at all.

Don't think you can go far wrong with these! For me it would be either Helena or Rosanna Kate, both of which are gorgeous (have always loved Kate as a MN).

Not sure about either Rosie or Heli as nicknames, though (all the Helen/Helenas I've met have ended up as 'Hels', which I'm not a fan of either. As a bit of a Chalet School fan, I'd probably be more inclined to go for 'Len' which is probably not many people's cup of tea either!) Would definitely go with Rosa as NN for Rosanna.

Both the Alexandras I've taught shortened it to Alex rather than Lexi - I'd say that this was the 'standard' shortening. Have come across several Lexis but all had that as their full given name.
