All nice, Hugo James for me! :)

Thanks all - I've always liked Hugo but have had some negative feedback (sounds try hard, type of thing) and DH likes Alistair. So do I but not sure about Ali/Al as inevitable short forms. Lastly James is a lovely "safe" choice but very popular. Argh...

Alistair! Ds1 was this for two days, and then we switched to Alexander for two days, to see which we liked best. Alexander stuck, but I do have a soft spot for Alistair too.

I'm going to be biased here as my DH is called Alistair Smile a few of his friends call him Ali, this makes me cringe so I understand why you're not sure. It just doesn't suit him. 90% of people use his full name though.

James - love
Hugo- ok
Alistair- dislike

James and Hugo - lovely names. Both were on my list (dh vetoed Hugo Sad) but we ended up with a dd anyway.

James.

I have one. I'm in Scotland where it's always in the top 10 and there's meant to be loads but we don't actually know any other child James'.

I can't say Alistair without saying it with a dreadful 'posh' Scottish accent so I'd choose Hugo as my second favourite.

Alasdair is the Gaelic for Alexander. It's good name; strong and substantial. (Alistair is an Anglicised spelling; the Gaelic avoids the nickname 'Ali', if that ,matters to you.) James is classic - short, elegant. Hugo is nice, too.

Whichever you choose among the three will be fine.

I like it spelt Alasdair as above. Not keen on the nn though which is unfortunately inevitable!

James without a doubt. Strong & stands the test of time. It's a name that he could have for all years in all walks of life.
Alastair is also nice but can't stand the non Ali.

Hugo is too try hard for me. The kind of name people give to their kids to try and gain a higher class, when actually it does anything but. Sorry!
