Changing middle name?

After months and months worrying that my DS middle name sounds silly with our surname we are thinking to change it when we have him christened (He's not a year old yet)

This probably sounds trivial to some ... 'hardly uses middle name' etc but it's been bothering me.

Question is will changing it and using 'Box 17' on the long birth certificate give him hassle during his life? Does anyone else have experience of this?

The name we'd like to change it to is similar in sound but doesn't merge into the surname like the current one, iyswim. Can't say it otherwise I will out myself!

TIA

I switched my ds fn and mn round on his birth certificate at 10 mnths old as we always used his mn. Its not caused any problems. The original name is still shown on his full cert with new name being in the section at the bottom. But the short basic certificate only shows his new name.

I changed my ds's middle name when he was a year old. Maybe the rules have changed, but when I did it a new certificate was issued if name was changed in first year. So the original name is not on the certificate. I am in Scotland so it could be different here. I felt so much happier once his middle name was changed so I recommend doing it if you are unhappy with current name. good luck x

Do it! I think people regret their choice of name far more often than we know and there should be no shame in changing your mind in the first year at all.

I had a wobble naming my first and so many friends told me they had had similar uncertainty over their own choice but hadn't felt they could change it.

I changed my daughters middle name in section 17...i would just remind anyone who looks at the birth certificate that they new name is at the bottom. I think it would make life so much easier if they put the old name in box 17 instead
