Guid Scottish baby names...suggestions please!

Does anybody have any suggestions for Scottish baby names? We live in England but would love a nod to my heritage. I really like Murdo but DH doesn't actually believe it's a real name (sigh) and had pretty much decided on Elspeth if we have a girl but have now realised Elsie might be a bit overused!?! I'd love something uncommon but also traditional....any ideas?

Hi - this thread is a little old. If you’re looking for a Scottish baby name, find the most popular here. MNHQ

Murdo is a great name and very Scottish, several in our family. Kirsty is good Scottish girl's name and not very common.

Thanks, I do love Murdo but just know it will never happen!

I love Morven for a girl!! Had forgotten that one! Morag is also really pretty.

Kaumana- how are you pronouncing Lachlan? Lach, or Loch?

My dh wanted murdo but only so he could announce "There's been a Murdo" in a Taggart-sequel voice at the birth. It is a good name though.

What about Munro?

I like Elspeth. Is Elsie a common nickname for Elspeth?

I went to school with a Lachlan - he was given a hard time over his name and we were in Scotland!

Will you all stop putting DSs name up there, I don't want anyone else to use it.
Thanking you kindly. Smile

Elspeth is very pretty - and not too like Elsie.

Some of these are very, very old-fashioned, but I've met most:
Ailsa
Davina
Catriona (Kat-ree-nah)
Heather
Alana/Alannah/Alayne
Aileen
Annis (=Agnes)
Eilidh (=Helen; Ay-leeh})
Ailis/Eilish (=Alice: Ay-lish)
Edina (goddess/city of Edinburgh)
Emer/Eimer
Euphemia ('Effie')
Seonaid = (Janet: Shonn-idge - the last syllable soft and faint)
Flora
Fenella
Gilda
Grizel (= old Scottish form of Grizelda)
Jean, Jeannie
Jessie (= Jean, Janet)
Johan =(Jo-ann)
Kirsty/Kirsteen
Lilias
Lindsay (modern, boy or girl)
Marsali =Marjorie
Morna
Maris
Rhona or Rona
Sileas = Julia (Shee-la)
Shona
Sine (Shee-nah)
Vanora

also, many female versions of male names, eg Robina, Dolina, Jamesina, even Murdina...
