Struggling to decide between the two. I would prefer a name not too popular and would also like the option of a nn

My DD is Eva so I would have to say Eva! Never been that keen on Florence.

But yes, Eva is very popular at the moment and lots of varients. I fully expect my DD to be in a class full of Evas, Evies, Eves, Evelyns and Avas. I can't deny it bothers me a bit (and I actually ruled out the name several times during my pregnancy for this reason!), but at the end of the day it was the only name DH and I agreed on. And we do love it.

I like Eva better

SabrinaMulhollandJjones Tue 07-Jan-14 01:07:00

Florence is nice, but Eva is beautiful.

Greentoothbrush Tue 07-Jan-14 00:57:48

Not keen on Eva, and I love the name Florence.

Eva is lovely, though it (and, I think, Eve or Evie) are very popular at the moment.

But then so is Florence, for which I don't really see the attraction. Always seems stodgy to me, I would prefer Flora, as someone else mentioned.

I teach about fifteen Eva's

Can I ask what nicknames you used to get?

HomeHypno Sun 05-Jan-14 18:38:31

I like Aoife which is pronounced a little like Eva. Obv a name that won't work everyone though.

flopsybunny45 Sun 05-Jan-14 17:49:18

I would be slightly biased wink!
When I was younger -1990s - I was the only one in primary and secondary school!!
Loved all the different nicknames I've had over the years.
My dh is actually the first person to call me by my whole name which I also love.

randdom Sun 05-Jan-14 00:07:38

I have cone across a huge number of eve/evey/Evelyn/Eva's in the last year through work. Only a couple of babies called Florence. I also think Florence is a nicer name!

justjodie92 Sat 04-Jan-14 23:34:26

I prefer Florence, but both are nice smile

fedup21 Sat 04-Jan-14 23:31:51

As a teacher, I've seen loads of younger siblings born over the last year who are called Florence which would put me off. Eva/Eve/ Evie/Evelyn/Ava have been extremely popular for ages.

If you're not fussed about popularity though, just go for the one you like best. Florrie/Flossie/Flora/Flo are all possible nicknames, though the AF acronym would put me off massively! You can't really shorten Eva except for Eve though?

In dds class one third of the girls named a variant of eve. Ridiculously popular one to avoid.

Ali398 Sat 04-Jan-14 21:20:05

I think I'm happy that both are relatively popular. Funnily enough I do know a few Eva's but no Florence's as of yet. I would prob be more worried if they were top 10.

toobreathless Sat 04-Jan-14 19:30:51

What about Flora?

Bit of a cross between the two & more unusual.

noddyholder Sat 04-Jan-14 19:29:54

Florence Know about 4 or 5 Evas

toobreathless Sat 04-Jan-14 19:29:27

Having had a peep at namesdarkgreener they are equally faddy:

EVA (girls): Up from 271st to 24th

FLORENCE (girls): Up from 194th to 34th

This is since 1996. If you are looking for not too popular I'm not sure either is the right name for you. But they are justifiably popular- both beautiful names.

pygmy Sat 04-Jan-14 18:31:48

Much prefer Eva. Florence is super faddy.

99redbafoons Sat 04-Jan-14 16:38:31

Eva is beautiful!

rainbowfeet Sat 04-Jan-14 16:35:17

I love both would find it hard to choose. grin

Actually love the sound of Eva Florence as 1st & middle names respectively

squoosh Sat 04-Jan-14 16:31:30

Florence is definitely faddy, it hasn't been as popular as it is now in over a century.

I prefer Eva, it's less fussy and more timeless, although it is very popular currently.

toobreathless Sat 04-Jan-14 15:57:11

Florence then based on your criteria:
Less popular (although trending)
Less faddy IMO
Much more nickname potentisl
