I'm almost 31wks and don't know what I am having. Here is my "short" list. DS3 is William Michael. I like fairly classic/formal names but will solid/friendly abbreviated version. Lots of usual suspects have already been ruled out because close family/friends have them.

Samuel (DH not so keen on Sam)
Joseph (like Joe as nn)
Dylan (what could this be shortened to?)
Matthew (sis in law dating one, puts me off as wouldn't be unique name in close family)
Arthur (not sure Art/Arti would be for us)
Stanley (really like not not sure I am brave enough)
Evan
Elliott (probably be middle name as family reasons)
Robert (DH wont have but I really like it)
Rory ( great name but no abbrev version is there?)
Albert (like Bert but not sure brave enough)
Ewan/Euan
Douglas (DH likes this and likes Dougie but can't decide if really like or really don't)

Charlotte
Erin (nice if is born on 17 March as am Irish decent)
Hannah (like fact it is classic and falling in popularity but what abbrev versions)
Evelyn (really love but don't want Eve so think that may rule it out)
Anna/Annabel
Francesca
Ellen (again, classic but not sure what nn would be)
Erica (think I really like this)
Eleanor (is probably our fave, could we have nn of Nell)

Thanks....I really will feel better whwn I can at least get it to a handful each.

Rory Elliot or Ewan Elliot for a boy and Eleanor Francesca for a girl are my favourites

Favourites are Joseph and Charlotte.
Saying that I am not a massive fan of Joe/Joey or Charlie/Lottie.

Also like Dylan & Euan and Erin & Erica.

Least favourites are Arthur, Stanley, Evelyn and Annabel.

Why are you so concerned with having Nicknames? Pick a name you love because you love it, even if its considered nickname.

If you both like the name Samuel (for example) then pick Samuel and insist on the full name. You cannot control what school friends etc call them when they are older, I realise that, but they could equally end up with a nickname that's completely unrelated to their name.

My brother was called by his surname throughout school, but at home he had his full name despite it being easily shortened.

I have a Charlotte and when she was a baby a friend asked if she could call her Lottie. I said no. That was that. She never has it shortened.

Out of your list I love Erin, Eleanor (but not Nell) and obviously Charlotte.

For the boys I love Dylan. If I ever have a boy this is one of the contenders.

My mistake, rather than nn, i mean the abbreviated version of the name. What could Erin, Erica etc from list be shortened to? Thanks

How can you shorten a 4 letter name?

And more importantly, why would you want to?

Really can't understand.

Precisely my point, i'm asking if people have any anecdotal suggestions if people do or try to .

A colleague of mine has a son called Dylan. His name unfortunately gets shortened by kids at school to 'dildo' . This would put me off ever using it.

Love Samuel and Joseph/joe, also Eleanor with nn Nell. But why would you even think of a short version of Ellen?! It IS short!!

I actually think your list of names is one of the nicest I,ve ever read here! With the except of Dylan (for the 'dildo') reason, and arthur (just one of those names I,ve never liked) they are all absolutely lovely!!!

If you love Stanley then go for it! I don't think you need to be brave. It is not an especially crazy choice at the moment; it has recently gone into the top 100. And is a good name too!

Ahh thank you for that, that has cheered me up, hopefully whatever we go for will be lovely. Grin

I know a little Stanley - lovely name!

Evan is my all time favourite boys name but DH won't let me use it Sad

Really like Charlotte, Hannah and Anna from your girls list. I've never known a Hannah or Anna be shortened to anything either.

I love Ewan and Rory, and Erin - however I must say, all the names on your list are likeable, not too popular (maybe with the exception of Evelyn, purely because the name Evie/Eva/Ava is so incredibly popular around here ATM!) and they all go with your previous DC name.

And if you love Stanley, go for it - don't feel like you have to be brave! If it suits him and you both like it, people will get used to it!

Evelyn tends to be shortened to Lyn rather than Eve ime. If it's pronounced correctly it sounds like ev-lyn rather than eve-lyn.

My favourite is Rory from the boys list, really like Samuel, Dylan, Elliott.

Annabel is my favourite from the girls list, also really like Hannah and Erin

Samuel - really like it but agree with your husband about Sam. Sammy is cute for little ones, the full version is classy and timeless.
Joseph - like it. Joe is also good.
Dylan - love it. Wouldn't shorten it.
Matthew - not overly keen but a good solid name.
Arthur - don't like it but I do really like Artie
Stanley - don't like this at all.
Evan - it's ok. The only one I've known was such a pain that it puts me off.
Elliott - love it.
Robert - bit dated? It's ok
Rory - don't really like it. For some reason I prefer the spelling Ruari but no idea why!
Albert - really don't like it but again, I only know one and he's objectionable.
Ewan/Euan - quite like it
Douglas - eeew, no, sorry, very much dislike

Charlotte - love it
Erin - really like it
Hannah - love it
Evelyn - nice name but they always seem to become Evies which I'm less keen on.
Anna/Annabel - really like both, especially Annabel
Francesca - love it
Ellen - quite nice, doesn't need a nickname
Erica - like it. Quite unusual I think. I've never met one.
Eleanor - I like it. Don't like any of the shortened versions except Ella but Nell is at least a change from Ellie.

I would go for Dylan or Elliot and Hannah or Francesca I think.
