Baby names

A brother for Genevieve

Hi everyone. So we found out it's a boy! But I can't think of any boys' names I like that meet my admittedly quite strict criteria. Basically, we have a very common, single syllable surname, so figured we could go a little bit fancy with the first names, hence Genevieve, which we love. It's recognisably a name, not crazy or naff, but not common nowadays either. So I'm looking for a similar kind of boys' name. Nothing beginning with a J sound (I don't want them all matchy-matchy) and nothing that makes me sound ridiculously posh when I'm calling them together in the park (think "Genevieve! Cosmo!")

Please help! If we can't come up with something we both like, I'm going to come under serious pressure to name the boy after my father-in-law - lovely man, awful name...

Dominic
Frederick

Can think of plenty others but they fail the posh pairing in the park test(though you would call out nicknames there ?? ).

Felix?

I was going to suggest Henry/Harry or Alexander but they fail on your "common" criterion.

And then Jasper, but the J sound blew that one.

Yes, Felix and Dominic, I like both those. Thank you both for trying- maybe I'll have to loosen my criteria! Out of interest, nemno, what else you got?

How are you pronouncing Genevieve?

The proper French way (Zhe-ne-vee-ev) or like Jenner-veev?

So many names begin with J! We both really like Francis, thank you ancient. And I've always loved Oliver, but DH doesn't. (And toby, we pronounce Genevieve the English way, as we're not French...)

I love Genevieve and my choice for boy's name to go with it would be Sebastien (with an 'e')

Emile and Fabian are lovely, but I would worry that the combination of either with Genevieve would make us seem like we were pretending to be all continental, which we're not... I am v difficult, I know...

Ditto Sebastien, very unfortunately, because that's one of my favourites.

Love Barnabas and Caspar. Abner- never heard that in my life. Is it some biblical thing? (And are these names just coming out of your head, ancient? If so, amazing!) But my current favourite has to be Gabriel. Great for a baby, and Gabe is a strong nickname, I think.

Abner used in 19 th century esp in east coast US. No idea where it comes from.

Yes, top of the head. I had to go down the family route with Ds, and there are so many gorgeous names.

Gabriel v nice and goes well with Genevieve. Quite a few of both round US recently, but why not. Gabriel Francis v nice.
