Is Sophie too popular, and do you think it will date?

I know it's been in the top 5 for years but I don't know any little Sophies at all... and our surname is v uncommon and always being spelt wrong, so I would love something easy to spell for her sake.

Other thoughts...
Anna
Sylvie
Tess

Yes and yes. It will be like Michelle or Sharon.

Sylvie is lovely.

DD1 is 14. There are two in her class.

Yes, I love Sylvie, but I prefer Sylvia.

It is quite popular but its a classic name like Catherine or similar iykwim. There will always be a few about but its not a faddy trendy name.

I love the name Sophie.

At the moment there seems to be alot of Sophia's about and not so many Sophies.

Sylvie is very pretty but seems to be on the up atm. I know 2 babies named Sylvie in the last year and seen it on mumsnet mentioned too as a favourable choice of name. Anna is very pretty too and rather classic. Tess - makes me wonder what its short for.

3 at pre school 2 at school. My friend has a 4 year old one and has name regret - she hadn't realised how popular it is and has had to double barrel her middle name to differentiate her from the others.

My boss is early 30's... surely it's an all-rounder?

kerala but that's a very good reason for me to use it, our last name is fiendishly unusual and for some reason nobody ever spells it right!

It's a classic name I think and I don't think it will date. There were Sophie's at my school (I'm 35), there were teenage Sophies at a theatre group I helped with in the mid 2000s and i know some little Sophies now. I think it's a pretty and elegant name. It's not a fad name. My daughter is Anna BTW, so I like that too!

Ive got a Sophie, it was dh's choice and yes ive encountered loads. It really grates on me when we're in the park and there are tons.

Once my dh told ours off and another child burst into tears at the man telling her off.

Doctors oh those poor little Sophies!! I do dread her being one of 3 in a class, but I honestly don't know a single one out of dozens of little girls I can think of.

Rhonda Jean seriously do you think it will be a Sharon? Was really hoping it wouldn't date, like Catherine or Anna or something. I think lots of other popular names like Ella and Evie etc may date because they weren't in use a generation ago - and that doesn't apply to Sophie?

I'm a 31 year old Sophie and I really like my name :)

I think Sophie is a classic name, but all names come and go in cycles. I know Sophies in their 40's, teens and little ones too.
Your other names are lovely too -Sylvie is quite popular where I live, but I know of no Sylvias. Tess I would also think was a contraction rather than the whole name - it is a diminutive of Elizabeth? (another timeless name)

I have an 8 week old Sophie. I also worried the same, but the midwives at the hospital said they'd not had one for a while, and there's only one other from my MN antenatal group.

Sophie is a classic name - it won't date Smile

I know of an 80 yr old, 14 yr old, and a 9 yr old Sophie so imho it doesn't date and I don't think it's as popular as Sophia is now so definitely use it if you love it Smile

Sophie is a fantastic name. Classic and timeless. It can't date, as there have always been Sophies. I love it. Love Sylvie too.

Thank you lovely people who think it won't date!

Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with a name being of it's time I should add! And no offence to any Sharons! I love my BFFs who are all Jennies and Tanyas (showing my age here Grin)

It's a classic and very pretty. Definitely NOT the 'Sharon or Tracey' of the future. IMO.

Report
RhondaJean · 22/10/2013 22:29

I do think it will date in that there will be a whole spat of Sophie's over about a ten year span.

I don't dislike Michelle or Sharon as names - but you can pretty much guess the age group anyone with those names will be in.

Theres a whole host of little Sophie's at my youngest daughters primary.

However I'm thinking perhaps it's a more common name in England in the past - I'm in Scotland and the only adult Sophie I know is English?

Any adult Scottish Sophie's out there?

Tess is short for Theresa isn't it?

I know a 35yo & 26yo Sophie. It was also the name everyone in my office called their newborn girls 3 years ago (before that we had a rash of Isabelle's & Harry's). I don't know any current newborn Sophie's but its undoubtedly popular.

Love Sophia, not keen on Sophie but it is a standard/classic name.

Love love Sylvie. Also think Anna is a great classic name.

My DD is 20 and several of her contemporaries are Sophies. So it has been popular for a long time, and before that was not thought of as 'old lady' or anything, just unusual.

I can think of 2 in my dd primary so not that popular

The two adult Sophies I know are two of my favourite people so I have very positive thoughts of it

I prefer Sophie to the ever increasing band of Sophias, Isabells and Olivias around. I think Sophia is one of those names rare 15 years ago and now everywhere whereas there are Sophies in every generation.

iI'd so very popular but wont date. I'd probably still be tempted more by Catherine or Elizabeth or similar.

Report
sparkle12mar08 · 22/10/2013 22:35

Yes I think it's over popular and will date. I also think it's rather twee as opposed to classy or classic, with the ie/ee sound at the end along with all the other Poppy/Daisy/Izzy/Millie's and so on. Sophia on the other hand is both classy and classic.
