Hi I prefer Marianne to Florence too. Pretty name. Would you shorten it? I like it as it is.

My number one girls name and DH has absolutely vetoed it so I'm extremely Envy if you get to use it! Elegant, beautiful without being remotely frilly, timeless, and pulls off the miraculous trick of echoing both Jane Austen and Leonard Cohen (both favourites of mine). Go for it!

Love Marianne. Less keen on Florence.

Thanks for the comments. I think we would shorten it to something but not sure what.

Glad you said it isn't frilly as that is my only reservation.

Love it. Would have been dc2's name but he was a boy.

I like Florence (DD middle name, so I would) Not so much Marianne, know someone with a Marielena can also spell it without the first 'e', which is also pretty.

LOVE it, and Florence!

I met a Marianna once - that was frilly. Marianne treads exactly the right side of the line in my opinion!

Love Marianne! Jane Austen and Cohen indeed (and nearly Shakespeare), and very cool. Plus I know a fab one Smile

Florence is also nice but so trendy in some areas right now that (1) there'll be more of them and (2) it'll date.

Do you adult ones or little ones?

I knew two adult Mariannes, both in Aberdeen. Neither were shortened. Lovely name.

I love the name Marianna.

My DDs have a friend called Marianna, and while I am very happy with my DDs names, I often have a pang of 'something' that I did not think of Marianna!

I adore Marianne, it's an underused classic.

I don't like Florence, I find it quite a hard name and it doesn't have many shortenings that are nice either.

Marianne is just gorgeous though!

Really nice! Definitely a great balance of classic/heard off but unusual and rare. I also like Florence.

Lovely, classy name and still fairly unusual.

Minty what reasons did your DH give for vetoing it? He clearly has no taste (in names), so can't you just overrule him?

Really like Marianne and know a fab one. It is never shortened.
