What is your first thought when you hear this name? I'm not British so I need to know how this name comes across to native English speakers. What kind of family does Alexa/Alexandra come from? In which social category would you put Alexa/Alexandra? Alexandra is the name for the birth certificate,Alexa is the short form for everyday use.

Love Alexandra smile

It's a name that runs through our family, always as Sasha though via Russian ancestors, never Alexandra, Alexa etc. not sure if it can be associated with a particular class; I know about an equal number of scumbags and poshies with the name.

Alexandra is a really beautiful name. One of my absolute favourites. Alexa is a massive no-no for me though, it's a tad too clunky for my liking. I hear Electra when I say it out loud. Alex is by far the nicest shortening of the name. I have a lovely friend who shortens to Alex. I also know a toddler who goes by Lex.

Sandra and Sandy....really not keen.

Alexandra is a lovely name. I know one who goes by Alexandra,Al,Allie,Alexa,Lex or Lexie depending on who she is with. Mid 20's.

Sandra is a bit dated I think.

We are considering this name for a girl

DH says Alexa sounds like a stripper's name confusedblush

He prefers Alexandra shortened to Alex

sparkle12mar08 Fri 11-Oct-13 21:08:22

Sandra is percieved as dreadfully dated over here - it's a 1950's-1970's housewive's name. Not good!

sparkle12mar08 Fri 11-Oct-13 21:07:16

Alexandra is gorgeous - a classic and classy name for a child. Alexa/Lexie etc is none of those things, they're awful and dare I say it, the dreaded 'chavvy' word.

I love Alexa or Alexia. I'd use it on its own though, I think its too long to be a shortened version IYSWIM. Alexa would probably get shortened to alex/allie/lexie/etc

happygreeneggsandham Thu 10-Oct-13 21:02:21

What about Sandra?

Just to throw another name into the mix, DD is actually Alexandria.

TheSporkforeatingkyriarchy Thu 10-Oct-13 15:07:44

I have an Alexandra, she always goes by her full name regardless of what the rest of us think (she will respond to any variant, including just "A", but if you ask if she is [nickname] she will say "No, I'm Alexandra.").

DoudousDoor Thu 10-Oct-13 15:06:17

I like Alex for a girl, so we're thinking Alexandra or Alexia as the full name (French-British family).

But it's true you can't control nicknames. Allie would be ok but Lexie wouldn't because it'd get muddled with a couple of other names in our family.

DD is an Alexandra. She's a Lexi because there have always been loads of Alexs around whereas she's the only Lexi we know

<<sticks out tongue>>

happygreeneggsandham Thu 10-Oct-13 14:26:21

in France, Sasha is a male name (there was a writer called Sacha Guitry)

Thurlow Thu 10-Oct-13 14:25:09

Our Alexandra is Alex or Allie. I hate Lexie too (sorry Lexies!) and I'm not keen on Lalie or Sandy. Alexa is nice, but there's a high chance it might get shortened at school to Al, Alllie or Alex so if you really don't like those, beware. I say I hate Lexie but have reconciled myself to the fact it might happen!

Bowlersarm Thu 10-Oct-13 14:21:12

Noooooo not Sandie!

happygreeneggsandham Thu 10-Oct-13 14:19:36

What about Lalie? Or Sandie?

happygreeneggsandham Thu 10-Oct-13 14:17:38

Well, I love Alexandra as a name for a grown woman, but I don;t like LExie or Alex as shortenings. I can't think of a better short name as Alexa.

PlayedThePinkOboe Thu 10-Oct-13 13:47:18

I'm an Alexandra - it's of greek origin and an international classic. Does it pass the "calling out" test? In spades!

Lexie otoh makes my lip curl and is best left to the pages of Hello.

Layl77 Thu 10-Oct-13 13:40:31

Alexa the x stands out to me so I prefer Alexandra. I think sexy Lexie don't like that at all.

Bowlersarm Thu 10-Oct-13 13:12:16

Prefer Alexa to Alex.

Alexandra I would think goes well across all the social classes.

I had no idea Lexie was considered chavvy. (Maybe because I don't know any chavs grin). Just as well I didn't have a girl, because that would have been a contender.

cupcake78 Thu 10-Oct-13 13:07:56

Not keen on Alexa but Alexandra is my favourite. Sister called Alexandra shortened to Alex.

Lovely name!
