The Irish can't say it, they pronounce it Root

People in parts of the SE say Roof

When you have to give your name over the phone, everyone thinks you've said Liz confused You often have to spell it.

Other than that it's a great name, given to wonderful people grin

'The Irish can't say it, they pronounce it Root'

That'll be some Irish pronounce it Root. I don't have any problems with the 'h'. I have to say though I'm not a fan, it's a bit of a snooze of a name.

It's my middle name smile

DaleyBump Mon 09-Sep-13 16:01:57

It reminds me of an old woman, but that might just be me.

DawnOfTheDee Mon 09-Sep-13 16:02:14

It's inoffensive but just a bit 'meh' to me. Not very dynamic. It's like the magnolia of names.

squoosh Mon 09-Sep-13 16:02:31

Tiny, angry, wizened old woman.

idiot55 Mon 09-Sep-13 16:03:26

Love it, nice and short, easy to spell, impossible to mispronounce and difficult to shorten , so all good!

GreatNorthRoad Mon 09-Sep-13 16:07:09

Yes, sorry Sqoosh, i thought that as soon as a pressed post

Spookey80 Mon 09-Sep-13 16:08:01

Love it smile
Agree that it's a classic name.

Seaweedy Mon 09-Sep-13 20:20:59

This Irish person can pronounce it perfectly and agrees it is a snooze fest.

I've never liked it because, ironically, it makes me think of its opposite meaning: ruthless.

I suppose it's because that's one of those odd words where we never use the positive form. Like disgruntled and uncouth.

vaticancameo Mon 09-Sep-13 21:36:43

Lovely, but doesn't work with monosyllabic surnames IMO.

GreatNorthRoad Mon 09-Sep-13 21:41:03

Ah but that one makes a great "joke" at a leaving do Enjoy - "They thought we were tough before but now we're going to be ....."

Heard that one a few times over the years!

Biscuitsneeded Mon 09-Sep-13 21:54:33

I think it's a strong name for a principled and not overly frilly person. I like it.

Vatta Mon 09-Sep-13 22:06:18

It's good, and meets the mumsnet test, ie she could grow up to be a model, or a teacher, or a high court judge.

She can't be a pirate, of course, but then maybe you're happy ruling that out as a career choice.

Whatwhatwhat Mon 09-Sep-13 22:48:26

Good but boring seems to be consensus.
Thanks all. I like it I think.
