Luke: Classic yet Cool, or Dull and Boring?

What do you think?

I'm torn. Luke is DH's current favourite name, and probably my second favourite that we both agree on.

DH thinks it's a classic yet cool name, and though I like it I have the slightest feeling it might be a bit....dull.

DH also likes the Starwars connection, I'm less bothered about that!

So, what do we think? Opinions and alternatives welcome!

Classic and cool.

I'd class it as a good, sturdy name that won't date.

It wouldn't be my choice, but I don't think it will date. I don't think it is a very "strong" name, but nothing wrong with it. Prefer Luca.

Classic and cool, I really like it.

Also like Luca and Lucas - and Marc and Marcus!

It's nice. But not wildly exciting. Maybe a little 80s....

I like it! Its on our list.

I like Lucas with Luke for short but it doesnt sound right with our surname which starts with a B.

That said, I actually think Luke is cooler as you hear Lucas so much these days.

Luke is a lovely name - however if you think it's a tad dull, how about Luca or Lucas? or for off topic a bit - Lachlan or Lorcan or Logan?

Not dull or boring, love it. Cool Hand Luke springs to mind, a classic film in my mind. It's biblical so will always be a classic.

Cool. I'm thinking cowboy, ranch-hand sort of cool. Paul Newman when he was young.

Thank you for the input - Luca and Lucas both nice too, but don't sound quite right with our surname. I think perhaps I'm over thinking it a little!

Classic and cool.......and you can do the "I felt your presents" joke at Christmas :)

There are two threads at the moment asking if nice, traditional names are too 'boring'. This one and the Catherine one.

They're not boring. They're nice, proper names. They don't sound made up or stupid, they don't sound dated and they can't be ruined by some celeb using the name or a tv character with it because there are enough Lukes and Catherines out there that it won't be the first thing that springs to mind.

There are some bloody awful names being suggested on here of late. 'Unique' is not always good.

It's a family name for us, and I did consider using it, but it didn't go with surname (begins with L)

I think it's classic, and not used frequently enough to become common.

(my brother is a 1980 Luke and did get a bit fed up with the Star Wars connection, it wasn't why my parents chose it Grin)

Bowlersarm · 26/08/2013 20:09

Oh yes Babouche it fits the high court judge/tea maker scenario. A Luke could be either!

My brother (now 24) was nearly named Stephen but my dad changed it to Luke at the last minute as he was born with cold hands lol! It's also DH middle name so we're using it as a middle name if DC4 turns out to be a boy.
