Horatio - good, bad or ugly?

BraveLilBear · 01/08/2013 18:02

DS is now 9 days old and is known as Little Man or Monkey or numerous other pet names that wouldn't be allowed on a birth certificate.

We want unusual but classy and maybe classic/due for a revival. Like English origin names too.

Currently agreeing on Horatio, maybe Montgomery. But just trying to gauge wider opinion. ..

Thoughts on Horatio? Any alternatives we might go for?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like fellatio. Sorry. How about Hugo?

Sorry just noticed you want English origin names.

Horatio is bad. I'm not really a fan of Montgomery either but, it's much better than horatio.

Ugly!

Monty is nicer.

Horatio can't really be shortened, though is the appeal for you? I like it, it makes me think of Hamlet.

I don't like Montgomery, and Monty makes me think of camp old Richard Griffiths in Withnail and I - "Monty, you terrible cunt!"

Thinking along a similar vein... How about Cosimo or Perry?

Love it!

It's at the top of my 'love, but not brave enough to use' list.

Monty is awful, unless DS is a puppy.

Horatio is very bombastic, plus it doesn't have any obvious nicknames, a pretty big name to carry off but I don't hate it.

I do hate Monty though, such a weasely name.

What about

Leopold
Nelson
Aldous

I love horatio, but DH wouldn't let me have it

I LOVE HORATIO. Had to put it in capitals to outweigh the negativity on this thread! Far better than Montgomery. it is totally on my list.

Please go for it!

Not keen on Horatio, do like Montgomery.
Also suggest:
Mortimer
Tobermory
Albermarle (Albie)
Augustus (Gus)

I like Horatio a lot, especially because of the connection with Nelson. Not keen at all on Montgomery though.

I think Horatio will invite bullying - sorry

A difficult name to grow up with I think. A bit difficult to live up, some may struggle to pronounce it (eg other small children), it may be tricky to pronounce in other languages and doesn't have obvious nicknames.

Hate both. Also hate pretty much every other suggestion on this thread, apart from Aldous, which is cool :o Better sticking to Monkey than going for Horatio (I also thought this was going to be a CSI thread, along lines of is Horatio shaggable - the answer is a resounding no! Wink )

I think it's bad, sorry but I love Horace, if that's any good?
I like Monty.

Names due a revivial:
Horace
Roland
Terence
Thaddeus

And ooh yes to Mortimer - love it.

I'm not keen on either I'm afraid, they are both slightly 'joke names' to me (kind of thing you might call a pet) but here are some I do like and you might:

Digby
Corin
Diggory
Griffin
Nathaniel
Gregory
Dominic
Peregrine
Julian
Justin
Gilbert

Roland and Terence are most definitely NOT due a revival. Have a heart woman!

Horatio is awful. Montgomery slighly better but not much. I'm not too keen on any of the names on this thread. And absolutely not Roland or Terence.
