i have come across one Mona pronounced Mo-na rather than Moana...she constantly had to correct people...that personally put me off the name....sorry op...

It's a bit of a granny name where I am and not in a nice way.

Yes, I would say moaner but be used - kids also like to rhyme, so at a push Loner Moana etc.

What about Mara?

Do kids still watch Mona the Vampire. It had a great theme tune. I imagine it would sound great sung in the playground.
