Love the name Bea but husband is not keen on Beatrice (its a personal bad association with someone he disliked)...are there any other options?

Its ok if they are not so obvious. I met a Balen which I liked but not sure works not being spanish.

please suggest other names

Beate/ beata - German Origin ( well the ones I know), pronounced bey-ah-ta

My brother-in-law's mum is called Bea, it's short for Beaufighter. All 3 of her sisters are named after aircraft, and their brother is called Vosper or something, after a ship. I think their dad was a bit eccentric. He had his own small tank, shortwave radio transmitter and used to continually suggest reasons for starting a war.

Beaufighter is a lovely name, though. Nice and summery.

Balen is French for whale, beware!

Rhienne Sun 14-Jul-13 17:18:08

Where I am it's Bey-ah-ta.

Bey rhyming with whey
Ah as the a in amish
and ta rhyming with the 'ca in arnica.

(Trying to figure out if I can actually hear any difference between whey and way and not sure I can...)

Just from reading Beate, I'd pronounce it bee-ta until you told me it was correct or not.
Spanish/Italian pronunciation would be beh-A-teh.
I know a few Belens of different ages, although it isn't a super-popular name (I live in Spain).

If you like Bea I would just use that smile

Sometimes Bay AH ta

BoreOfWhabylon Sun 14-Jul-13 16:11:02

Bee AH ta

Can also be spelled Beate but pronounced the same way.

bumbleandbumble Sun 14-Jul-13 15:59:02

Yes. sorry typo. I meant Belen.
How do you pronounce Beata?

On list now is

elQuintoConyo Sun 14-Jul-13 14:18:52

B pronunciation - I think Beatrice. But it could also be Belinda, Betty, Barbara... It's the name of my childhood bunny (B, not Barbara!)

Bay-a I've no idea. Italian and Spainish would obviously be Beatrice.

By the way, it's Belen in Spanish, I've never heard of Balen. (Belen is the Nativity).

thegreylady Sun 14-Jul-13 14:09:38

Beata is lovely.

charitygirl Sun 14-Jul-13 13:38:02

Well if that's the pronunciation you like, Beata is a no-brainer!

twentyfourcarat Sun 14-Jul-13 13:34:31

I know a Rebecca who is B...

Onetwo34 Sun 14-Jul-13 10:54:28

The baya way of pronouncing it, will make it pretty hard for English speakers to think of an alternative I fear.

I think it might be hard for native English to get bay a, even from Beatrice you usually hear bee a.

rosyryan Sun 14-Jul-13 10:39:09

The only name I can think of with Bay in it is the Samoan name Eapeisi which is pronounced Air-BAY-see smile

Rhienne Sun 14-Jul-13 06:39:27

I also know a Beata, which I think is pretty.
