Just found out I'm having a girl, I plan on using the name Niamh but when I was pregnant with my DS and people asked what name I would've used if he was a she and I told them 'Niamh' I was greeted with the usual "oh no" or the screwing up of faces which meant they thought it was crap hmm.

Lovely name. I definitely prefer the proper spelling too smile

Don't discuss names with others as people can be very picky and fussy about your choices. Just announce the baby after the birth.

It's the Irish equivalent of 'A Boy Named Sue' smile

I wasn't sure if it was a unisex irish name tbh. I guess not! Its a pretty name though I' m sure it will be character building for him.....

Niamh was a woman in an Irish legend - Niamh Cinn Oir - who came from Tir na nOg - the land of the young - where people never grew old. Nice name

I have a Niamh! Love it and hear nothing but positive comments about it. No problems with the spelling. Go for it and don't tell anyone the name until after the birth!

Never, ever tell people your chosen names before the baby has arrived!

Namechanger012345 Fri 05-Jul-13 23:15:05

Gorgeous name, I love it! Ignore people giving you funny faces about it - some people will always have an opinion but there is nothing wrong with the name Niamh. It is lovely.

Beautiful name. I know a 4yo one and a 40yo old one and the 40yo would say be prepared for you and her to have to spell it to everyone so if you can live with that then go for it.

AllegraLilac Fri 05-Jul-13 20:35:38

Naimh is great!

Fairygen Fri 05-Jul-13 20:34:43

I love it! Was going to call dd Niamh, but it's very similar to my name. Great choice, especially with the correct spelling.

Lovely name smile

IfUSeek almost as unreasonable as not understanding how to pronounce Siobhan. Both are pretty common these days and Niamh is lovely.

I think it is a lovely name.

Also know someone (aged 6) with Neve as a middle name, whose parents were shocked when the birth congratulations cards spelled it Niamh!

Ah thanks for the reassurance smile

Alisvolatpropiis Thu 04-Jul-13 17:52:17

It's lovely. And used often enough in mainland UK for only the wilfully rude to pretend they don't know how to say it.
